A secure wireless network on your home router is a guarantee that you can use the Internet without fear that someone will hack into the network or start connecting uncontrollably from other devices. Unfortunately, it happens that someone without your knowledge gained access to a wireless network and connects to the Internet. To prevent this from happening, it is better to set a strong password for Wi-Fi. We present instructions on how to change the password on the TP-Link router.
How to get to the settings interface
TP-Link is one of the most popular manufacturers of home routers. Its configuration interface is convenient in that it practically does not change on different models, it is intuitive for any user. Accordingly, setting up this router is very simple, and there are usually no difficulties in understanding how to change the password on the TP-Link router.
Make sure that the router is connected to the mains, there is an indication on it. The cable from the provider should be included in the blue connector. In addition, the router is connected to the computer with an additional cable connected to one of the LAN connectors (the router is already sold with this cable).
Then open a browser and enter the following in the address bar: 192.168.1.1
And sometimes the address 192.168.0.1 will be relevant
You will be taken to the settings panel, which will request a username and password. You must enter the standard admin / admin data. If they do not fit, then the correct pair of username and password can be found at the bottom of the router. So, you got to the main page of the interface, now you can go to the appropriate profile and change the password on the TP-Link router.
Wi-Fi setup
As already noted, the firmware of various models of routers of this manufacturer are not very different. To demonstrate this clearly, consider the two most popular models of this line of equipment.
How to change the password on the TP-Link router TL WR841N? From the main page of the interface, enter the “Wireless Mode” item in the menu on the left (if the interface is in English, then this menu will be called Wireless). Next, follow the link from the menu that opens, as in the screenshot below. You will be prompted to select one of the encryption types. If you select the topmost item "Disable protection", then the home Wi-Fi network will remain open, and anyone can connect to it.
You need to select the WPA / WPA2 Personal menu bar (the name does not differ in English and Russian firmware) and set the appropriate parameters:
- Type - WPA2 PSK.
- Encryption - AES.
- In the line "Wireless Password" enter the desired password.
- Leave the last line unchanged so that it has a value of 0.
The screenshot demonstrates how it should look.
How to change the password on the TP-Link TL WR741ND router? Similarly, the settings change on this model of TP-Link routers. The necessary items are selected in the menu on the left, and the values fit into the fields that are activated when you select WPA / WPA2 Personal.
In order to compare the firmware versions, look at the screenshot. The settings for this router will look like this.
Important! It is better not to choose the type of WEP encryption, since today it is considered obsolete, and it is much easier to crack it.
Password Requirements
It is not enough to know only how to change the password on the TP-Link router, it is also important to take care of the security issue. To protect yourself from those who want to connect to your network, use the following password entry guidelines:
- The password can be between 8 and 63 characters long. It is recommended not to use a minimum length. The more characters a password contains, the more difficult it is to crack it.
- You need to alternate the letters of the English alphabet and numbers. In this case, letters are better to use different registers.
- Do not use simple phrases or obvious combinations as a password, and avoid repeating characters and characters following each other on the keyboard.
- It is also better if the combination of characters is random and does not make any sense. But in this case it will be more difficult to remember.
- Take care to remember the password. Write it down and keep the password sheet along with the contract documents from the provider.
Good password example: M34fP974DApQ96.
Bad password example: 1234qwer.
End of setting
After the password on the TP-Link router has changed, you need to restart the router (you will see a hint about this right on the settings page).
After that, you need to do the following: on all devices that have already been connected to this wireless network (smartphones, tablets, laptops), you need to find your network in the list of available ones, delete it and reconnect with a new password.
If you have any difficulties or questions, then on the official website of the manufacturer there are interactive emulators for all models of TP-Link routers, where you can independently see the various configuration options.
