Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus is primarily associated with freedom from fascist invaders. On July 3, as a result of the Bagration operation, the capital of the Republic of Belarus, the city of Minsk, was liberated.

The beginning of the 1990s was a very difficult time for the state, as well as for other countries participating in the USSR. The economic crisis has led to confusion. Plants closed, the standard of living of the population fell, crime increased. But gradually, life began to improve.





In the period 1991-1996, Independence Day was celebrated on July 27. The Declaration of Sovereignty of Belarus, signed in 1990, dates from this number.

Since that day, the country has gained independence. But this could not have happened if in 1944 Soviet soldiers had not driven the Germans to the west. Indeed, according to Hitler’s plans, 75% of the population would be destroyed. The rest would turn into slaves. Therefore, in order to perpetuate the memory of the hero-liberators, it was decided to establish a different date.

The initiator of the transfer was the President of Belarus. At his suggestion, a nationwide referendum was held in 1996, as a result of which 88.18% of Belarusians voted to change the holiday date to July 3. Since then, the Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus coincides with the day of liberation of the capital.

A year before this significant date, a new national emblem and flag were selected in a referendum.

July 3 is officially considered a public holiday.

A variety of celebrations are held throughout the country. But with the greatest scope, Independence Day is celebrated in Minsk.
