Today, a simple pencil is not a unique product at all. On this simple thing, which many have at hand, no one pays attention. However, two centuries ago such products were a real luxury.
History of occurrence
Like many inventions of world importance, the idea of creating a simple pencil appeared purely by accident.
Once Joseph Hartmut, who owned a Czech chemical glassware factory, studied finished products. He accidentally broke a cup-crucible. The flying piece of the product, which incredibly hit the paper during the fall, left a black mark on the sheet. This fact is very interested in Joseph. He found out that the splinter was able to leave the strip due to the graphite present in the product. In the course of numerous experiments, he deduced the ideal ratio of clay and graphite, which allowed Hartmouth to begin the production of high-quality writing cores. Joseph called his products "kokhinor", which means "unparalleled."
Factory Tour
KOH-I-NOOR pencils are made in the city of Ceske Budejovice. They have been creating them since 1790. It is surprising that all the pencils of the most famous brand today are produced on several machines. On the one hand, planks of California cedar are placed in the working unit, and on the other, finished lead from graphite. Using a machine, hollows are milled in the planks, into which a graphite rod is then placed. After gluing both sides, a closed pencil case with nine leads is obtained. After the glue hardens, the board is sent to another machine, cutting it into nine separate pencils.
Today, KOH-I-NOOR pencils are produced using the same technology as several centuries ago. Unless the California cedar is delivered today from China, and not from California.
Further, the products are sent to the next workshop. There, their surface is painted in the desired color. KOH-I-NOOR pencils are coated with the selected ink three times. After drying, the next workshop awaits them. There, a golden tip is attached to each product with or without an eraser.
There are several more workshops at the factory where KOH-I-NOOR pencils are packaged, checked for the presence of a logo, and their quality is also manually controlled.
