In 1810, Barclay de Tolly initiated the creation of an expedition of secret affairs at the Ministry of War, later renamed the Special Chancellery under the Minister of War. The employees of this department collected strategically important intelligence information abroad, monitored and reported on foreign troops and their maneuvers at the border, and also carried out serious work to identify foreign agents. The first head of this unit was the adjutant wing Colonel A.V. Voeikov, who took office on September 29. Intelligence Day began to be celebrated much later.
After the revolution, intelligence activities continued to be among the main priorities of the new state. On November 5, 1918, the Registration Directorate emerged, which included intelligence (intelligence) and military control (counterintelligence). It was headed by Semyon Aralov.
In 1918, special courses were organized at which future intelligence officers were trained. The subjects studied included topography, tactics, intelligence intelligence, and others. Later they began to teach English, German and other foreign languages. In 1926, intelligence agencies became known as the IV Office of the Red Army Headquarters.
Intelligence during the Great Patriotic War
All the activities of the Intelligence Directorate were focused on ensuring military operations. Not only all regions of the country were covered, but also occupied by the enemy and the territories of foreign states. Agents of reconnaissance and sabotage groups were thrown behind enemy lines, many of which subsequently became the basis of partisan detachments. Information gathered by strategic and operational intelligence laid the foundation for all military operations.
Since 1942, the Intelligence Agency became subordinate only to the people's commissar of defense. The activity was completely focused on undercover intelligence both in the USSR and on the territory of other states. Subsequently, a number of transformations were carried out, and since 1949 the structure was assigned the name of the GRU of the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
Modern intelligence
Her area of interest continued to develop and expand. Now it covers everything that affects the preservation and strengthening of state security. The GRU includes all types and directions of intelligence that only exist at present, and this is a large number. Intelligence Day is currently being celebrated throughout the country; representatives of this profession are congratulated and honored. Indeed, it is thanks to their activity that all important information is obtained in the military, economic and political fields. Military intelligence officers observe the hot spots, the actions of extremist and terrorist organizations. The possible sources and ways of the distribution of the components of weapons of mass destruction and nuclear weapons are being studied.
