Many popular games of past years are still of interest to users. And this is a merit not only of the developers, but also of the players themselves, creating various modifications, introducing a lot of variety into the usual gameplay. It can be either the simplest add-ons that change textures, or global ones that can significantly expand the gameplay. Of course, the process of creating such modifications requires considerable time and labor, but often the developers themselves seriously help the mod-makers, integrating support for custom creations into the game.
But what about those game products in which such support is not provided at all and which at the same time also react very negatively to interference in the internal structure? What if the understandable desire of enthusiasts to add something to the game, improve or fix leads to constant errors, crashes and freezes of your favorite game? For this, special utilities have been developed that allow you to make certain changes to games without interfering with their internal files. One such program is Texmod. How to use it, it is worth knowing to every sophisticated gamer.
What is Texmod?
Texmod is a utility designed to replace in-game textures and add new ones to games that do not support custom add-ons. It is a launcher that launches the executable file of the game with certain parameters that are not provided by the developers. It’s clear from the name that the application works only with textures (there are other utilities for changing other parameters of the game). The game texture files perceived by the Texmod program are packed in special containers with the * .tpf extension, and it is in this format that they can be found on resources devoted to game modifications.
The principle of the program
To successfully install the desired texture (or texture pack) into the game, you must first download its file to your computer. In this case, the texture file can be either an independent modification (the usual substitution of the appearance of game objects), or part of a global addition (new locations, character outfits, etc.), for the installation of which you will need to use a whole range of programs. In running Texmod, the path to the file is indicated, after which the game launch button is pressed. At this moment, the utility redirects the game’s requests to internal resources to requests to external resources, without making any changes to the game archives themselves.
How to use Texmod
The utility is distributed free of charge, so it can be safely downloaded from any gaming resource. To install Texmod, just unzip it to any place on the disk. The process of interaction with the program can be considered in detail using the example of the game "Mass Effect 3", which does not support external add-ons. You can use Texmod to install mods in both the regular and the Steam versions.
Launch Texmod on a disk edition of the game
In the "boxed" version of the game, modifications are installed as follows:
- Run the Texmod.exe file.
- In the program window, under the Target Application line, click the button with the image of the folder.
- Go to the directory with the executable file of the game.
- In the Package Mode section opened by default, click on the folder icon, select Browse from the pop-up menu.
- Go to the folder with the saved * .tpf files, select one or more (depending on the requirements of the modification).
- Start the game by pressing the Run button.
How to use Texmod if the game was purchased through Steam
In this case, the procedure is slightly different, since additional actions are required:
- Check the status of the Steam client, close it if it is running.
- Rename the file masseffect3.exe in the game folder without using Cyrillic characters.
- Copy the program file to the game directory and rename it to masseffect3.exe. If this is not done, Steam will not launch the game.
- Launch Steam through the MassEffect shortcut.
- Instead of the game, Texmod will open, in which you will need to perform all the same manipulations as for the offline edition of the game.
In both cases, you don’t have to perform any additional actions with the program: using Texmod, as it turned out, is quite simple. Well, to evaluate the result of installing the mod, you will need to interact directly with the gameplay. In the case of Mass Effect, this can be the passage of a plot to a certain point, the opening of a certain type of weapon, change of armor, etc. If we are talking about a simple replacement of one or more textures, it is not necessary to start a new game. But if the textures are part of a global modification, sometimes a full restart may still be required.
