Photos come in a variety of formats: png, jpg, bmp, and so on. But many confuse the jpg format with jpeg. Some people even think that these are completely different formats that have different properties, sizes, and so on. In fact, this is not so, since jpg and jpeg are the same format. So what is the difference between jpeg and jpg, why did many people start confusing these formats?
Jpeg and jpg: difference
What is the difference between Jpeg and Jpg? These formats are no different at all. The difference is only in the absence of the letter e, otherwise everything is the same. But what is their difference then, how did the Jpeg format come about?
Everything is very simple. Previously, operating systems did not support four-digit endings, such as Jpeg and so on. The maximum could use a three-digit ending, and that is how jpg came about. And the Jpeg format appeared a little later, when operating systems began to support four-digit endings and even more.
But many are already used to the Jpg format, so even now, after so much time after the advent of new operating systems, people still continue to use this format instead of Jpeg. Some programs themselves by tradition write Jpg, and not a new version. In fact, there is nothing special about this, all the same, you can upload Jpeg photos and Jpg almost everywhere.
They have the same size (for example, png photos weigh more than Jpg or Jpeg, and Jpeg does not differ from Jpg), the same appearance, the number of pixels, and so on.
Change jpeg to jpg or vice versa
To change a png photo to Jpeg or Jpg, you will need separate converters, but Jpeg and JPG are no different from each other, so you do not need to use additional programs and converters to do this. To change the format from Jpeg to Jpg and vice versa:
- Right click on the photo.
- Go to "Properties".
- Change the ending (if there is Jpeg, you need to delete the letter e, and if Jpg - you need to add the letter).
Since the formats do not differ from each other at all, this letter does not play any role, so you can change the name and format directly from your desktop, without using various third-party services that quite often bother with advertising, and in some cases along with viruses are downloaded by photos.
Total
We found out how the Jpeg format differs from Jpg. Every person who uses a personal computer should know such nuances. There is nothing special about this knowledge, and, most likely, there is little where it can come in handy, but it is always important to know what you are working with, which file you are using and what will come next.
The real format of this file is Jpeg, as it is called the Joint Photographic Experts Group, but because of the old systems it was impossible to write the full name. Now everything is fine.
