Have you ever encountered the problem of uneven stitching, holes from sewing? The reason for this may be a wrong needle for your machine. Of course, it will not be difficult for professional seamstresses to pick up needles for sewing machines, but for lovers of sewing or just for beginners, information about their varieties, differences and features will be useful.
There are household and industrial sewing machines. One of the differences between them is the needle holder. This is the hole where the needle is inserted and fixed. The hole has a certain size, shape and depth. Therefore, only a needle with a certain length and shape is suitable for a certain type of machine.
Varieties
If you look closely, then on the bulb of the needle you will find a number. These are numbers that indicate its diameter (thickness). The size range ranges from 60 to 110 mm.
- 60, 70, 75 mm - needles for sewing machines that are used for sewing light fabrics. The tip is slightly rounded, which prevents the formation of puncture marks after sewing. This is achieved due to the fact that the needle does not break a hole, but spreads the fiber of the fabric. Sewing knitwear, chiffon, silk and other “delicate” fabrics with such needles is very good.
80, 90 mm - needles for denser fabrics. The tip is pointed, which facilitates the entry of the needle into the fabric and prevents the formation of skipped stitches. Use them when sewing trousers, jackets, suits, outerwear, etc.- 100, 110, 120 mm - the thickest and sharpest needles for sewing machines. Used for tailoring coats, products made of denim, twill, tarpaulin. They are very durable, capable of flashing the thickness of fabric layers up to 1.5 cm.
There are also universal needles, embroidery, for sewing leather.
- Universal. They can be of any size, suitable for non-capricious fabrics.
- Embroidery. Designed for embroidery with special threads, differ in the hole of the eye of the needle. It is a little wider, designed so as not to damage the fabric or thread.
- The skin needles have a slightly flattened, cutting tip. Ideal for sewing leather goods and leatherette. Their peculiarity is that they gently cut the skin and leave no residue after the line.
Differences
Needles for industrial sewing machines are different from household flasks. This is the top of the needle that goes into the needle holder. The needle bulb for industrial machines is rounded, and for household ones, it has a longitudinal section. The second difference is the length. You cannot insert needles of different lengths into the needle holder, and if you insert, you will not be able to sew a stitch.
On any needle there is a groove located along, it helps guide the thread. When installing the needle in an industrial machine, the groove should be on the left hand side. Household machines are very different. For example, the seagull “Seagull” is characterized by the installation of a needle. The machine performs a straight stitch, zigzag and finishing stitches, so the needle is set forward by the groove, and the cut of the bulb in it is on its own.
Properly selected needles for sewing machines will provide you with a beautiful and even stitch, preventing thread breakage and a product without punctures.
