Marine Corps Day is associated with the events of 1705 and the creation of the Russian fleet back in the time of Peter the Great. The main goal of the establishment of the Russian marine corps was the desire of the sovereign to break through to the Baltic and Azov Sea and establish ports, and the archery teams, which have been in the crew of each flotilla since the time of Ivan the Terrible, are considered the forerunners of the first marines of Russia. In modern Russia, Marine Corps Day is celebrated on November 27. The holiday is held less solemnly than Airborne Forces Day, and most Russians do not take part in the celebrations.
History : The first team of professional "naval soldiers" in the Russian State appeared in 1669 by order of Peter I, and the crew of the famous ship "Eagle" became its basis. But the official date for the appearance of the Marine Corps is considered to be November 27, 1705, since this day dates the order of Peter the Great, which contains a line about the need to create "regiments of naval soldiers." In any case, this unit of the Russian troops has been operating smoothly for three centuries, and the Day of the Russian Marines today is celebrated on the same date on which the emperor signed the decree.
The Russian marines, which are an integral part of the crew of the Russian fleet, fought almost continuously during the 18th-19th centuries, taking part in the most difficult battles in the Baltic and Black, White and Mediterranean Seas. The infantry structure was constantly improved, for example, in 1810 the Guards Naval Crew appeared, whose task was to effectively land amphibious assault forces in battlefields and behind enemy lines.
Marines in the USSR : After the revolution, the Day of the Marine Corps was not celebrated, and practically no recollections were made of the heroic deeds of military personnel in the fleet until 1939, and even a special division of marines did not exist at that time. Only in 1939, on the eve of World War II, did the Soviet government decide to revive such military units. By 1941, the number of marines in the USSR was already about 500,000 people, and quite often infantry took part even in land battles, for which they were removed from ships.
However, by the 60s, the marine corps in the USSR was again liquidated, although in the USA, the main adversary of the Soviet Union, such units of troops functioned, and their number was approximately 200,000. Therefore, in 1963, naval units in the USSR were reborn again, at first the Guards Bialystok Regiment was founded, and later other units.
Modern history : Today, the Russian marines have a total of 12,500 professional military personnel trained to land in a certain, initially given territory, and able to quickly prepare a bridgehead even before the arrival of the main military units. Marines reliably guard the water borders of Russia, and also take part in various operations on the sea and land, which the Russian army has to conduct.
Features : Marine Corps Day can be seen as a holiday that draws the attention of Russians to the crucial role in strengthening the stateβs power, which marines have been playing for centuries. Congratulations on the day of the Marine Corps on this day sound from the command, however, large-scale events are not held, and most of the Marines often celebrate their well-deserved professional holiday in a narrow circle - with colleagues or family. Congratulating each other, the infantrymen recall the exploits of their predecessors, the awards received , military comrades and commanders, however, parades and demonstrations on this day have not yet been held.
