Cold colors, minimal decoration, brick and concrete walls without wallpaper, the absence of curtains, and sometimes even the windows themselves - these are all characteristic features of the loft style.
Loft style story
The word "loft" has English roots (loft) and translates as "attic". And indeed, it was under the roofs that the premises located in the upper part of the buildings of factories, plants, warehouses began to be decorated. The attics began to be successfully converted into workshops, studios, galleries, and later for housing.
The heyday of the loft style fell on the 50s of the XX century. The idea to use abandoned office buildings for residential premises originated in New York. It was here, due to lack of finance, that free artists were forced to rent such areas that did not have any hint of repairs. They placed their workshops in the attics, arranged exhibitions and simply lived. Later, the loft-style rooms were appreciated by the American elite. This contributed to the fact that abandoned attics turned into housing inaccessible to most people.
The loft style is simple and functional, with a large number of coarse metal elements, such as pipes, stairs. Since windows are not always in the attic rooms, an important role in the design of such an interior is given to artificial lighting.
Features of loft style lighting
In the loft style, it is not customary to use walls for zoning rooms. For this, low glass or other lightweight partitions are used. Light helps to divide the room into zones. It does not use one large chandelier in the center, but a variety of loft-style lamps are more acceptable: on the walls, on the floor, on the table.
To achieve the play of light is the main task of the designer designing the room in the attic. Even if there will still be a central chandelier, it is only small in size and subject to additional lighting in the room. Since the ceilings in such rooms are often high, this makes it possible to use original multi-level pendant lights.
Loft lamps: views
In a room decorated in a loft style, there should be many lamps. They are used with a decorative and functional purpose. Lamps are wall, ceiling or pendant, floor, table. All of them can be simultaneously present in one room.
Loft-style pendant lights : most often, lamps on tires are used to accurately display the industrial style. Their main advantage is the ability to adjust the direction of the light. Spotlights can also be used to highlight individual areas in a room.
A loft wall lamp should look similar to a pendant. It is desirable that it can be rotated, which will illuminate the farthest corners of the room.
Floor and table lamps (floor lamps, lamps) are often performed in the same style direction. For this, similar shades and similar bases on bent legs are used.
Materials for loft fixtures
In the "attic" room should be used a minimum of decor in the design. Loft luminaires are made of coarse, cold materials such as glass or metal. Also, a wooden snag, an old spotlight or a street lamp can fit into the room.
Using recycled materials in the loft style has become a regularity. Natural materials and household waste (bottles, pans, jars) are suitable for this. The main condition when designing a room in the loft style is to adhere to one form. If round luminaires are used, then there should be no place here.
Do -it-yourself stylish loft lamp
You can attach your hand to interior design in the loft style by making a pendant lamp yourself using improvised materials. For this you will need: an empty glass bottle, a wire with a lamp, a thick woolen thread, a decorative cord, matches, a container of cold water, an emery bar for grinding.
The manufacture of the lamp begins with cutting the bottle. To do this, she tightly wraps a thread several times in a previously marked place, approximately in the middle. For the next stage, you need matches. They need to set fire to the thread, and when it is almost burnt, the bottle is lowered into a container of water. Here it bursts into two halves, just in the marked place.
The bottom of the part of the bottle where the neck is located must be sanded. To do this, you need an emery bar moistened with water. The bottom of the bottle is polished in a circular motion along the bar.
Now you need to take a wire with a lamp and decorate it with a cord. Then it should be carefully inserted through the neck of the bottle. The lamp is ready. The second part of the bottle can be used as a glass or for planting seedlings.
Using bottles of different shapes and colors, you can make original loft fixtures. They will be a wonderful decoration in the apartment or in the country.
