Servants (Arabian Greyhound) is an ancient breed of dog that is famous for its fantastic speed. These dogs were used to hunt gazelles, hares and even wild boars. It was a great pleasure to observe the work of the servant. The dog did everything swiftly and maneuverably, like a cheetah. Now representatives of the breed are participating in dog races.
Breed history
North Africa is the birthplace of the breed of dog males. Seventh-ninth century BC date the first mention of frisky dogs that helped the Bedouins hunt. In the Egyptian pyramids, archaeologists have found the mummies of Arab greyhounds.
In the nineteenth century, the first Europeans visited the nomad tribes. They were amazed at how the locals treat dogs of the breed of mica. Representatives of this species were allowed to live in tents with their families. In the cold season, dogs were covered with blankets and fed the best meat. But at the same time, a strict selection was carried out in the breeding.
Of the entire litter, only 2 of the strongest puppies were left. If an adult dog did not show the necessary working qualities, then it was not at all allowed for breeding. As a result of hard selection, the dogs turned out to be strong, impetuous, with excellent eyesight. They were able to adapt to the harsh conditions of the desert.
At the end of the nineteenth century, representatives of the breed came to Europe. Arab greyhounds were brought to France. Unfortunately, in the twentieth century during the period of world wars, the European herd of dogs of the described breed almost disappeared. In the second half of the century, the Arab greyhounds began to revive.
Due to the fact that hunting with such dogs was prohibited in Europe and in some parts of Africa, their numbers remained very low for a long time. Only by the end of the twentieth century the number of representatives of the breed of mica increased. Greyhounds in this period were carefully studied, honed their working qualities in competitions.
Appearance
Representatives of the breed have a strong skeleton, steel muscles. On their paws they have powerful long fingers. They help in fast running. The Arab Greyhound breed standard is registered by dog handlers from France. Height at the withers of such dogs is about 68 cm. The weight of an adult greyhound should be from 17 to 30 kg. Dogs with a larger body weight are sometimes found. The head of the representatives of the breed is elongated, small. Ears are hanging and long. The scissor bite is correct. The tail is very hard, thin, long. The hair of the representatives of the breed is short, smooth, almost imperceptible.
Suppose red color of all shades. In this case, a black mask may be on the face. Tigger is not a marriage. A white spot on the chest is also acceptable.
Character
Now let's talk about the character of the Arabian greyhound, a photo of which is presented in the article. These dogs are suspicious of strangers; they may exhibit good watchdog qualities. With the owner and members of his family such dogs are obedient and affectionate. I would like to say separately that the Arabian Greyhound has unlimited love for the main person. Representatives of this breed are very difficult to tolerate separation from the owner, while at the same time they are jealous of his attention to other animals.
Do not start a dog for families with small children. A child can, without realizing it, hurt an animal. Arabian greyhounds do not belong to those dogs that can calmly tolerate this behavior of children.
The nature of the representatives of the breed is quite independent, for this reason it is quite difficult to get a dog to perform some tricks. Everything that does not concern persecution and hunting is of little interest to them. But in the process of chasing the dog hears the master perfectly, his orders, instantly obeys. Poorly, such a dog gets along with other pets, as it perceives them as potential prey. You can make friends, of course, pets if you grow them together since childhood.
Representatives of the breed are very active, so they need a large area for running. The animal will be deeply unhappy if it lives in a confined space, and walks will be carried out on a leash.
Care and maintenance
It is advisable that the dog live outside the city, where there is enough space for safe walking and running. During the walks, the Arabian greyhound can chase after some animal, whether it be a cat or a rat. However, she obviously will not look at the road, as a result of which she may be injured. Therefore, safe places for walking are needed.
You can let this dog off the leash only in deserted places, away from the roads. You can not keep representatives of this breed on the street, as they have too thin coat. She cannot protect them from dampness and cold. It is necessary to keep the pet in the house, having arranged for him aside from drafts a sunbed. In frosts, a dog in clothes should be led out. It can be either a jacket or a sweater that will protect the case. This dog should not be bathed often, especially using soap or shampoo. It will be enough to take care of the hair with the help of a massage brush.
Food
It is better to choose a quality ready-made food for such a dog with a specialist. Very often, representatives of the breed are allergic to the components of dry food. In addition, when calculating the daily norm of nutrition, it is necessary to take into account the physiological state of the animal and its physical activity.
If you plan to feed the dog "natural", then know that the basis of the menu should be lean meat. It should be about 70% of the total diet. Also in the menu of the breed should be products such as various vegetables, kefir, cottage cheese, as well as cereals in the form of friable cereals.
Two-month-old puppies should be fed about 5 times a day, focusing on fermented milk products and meat. Then gradually introduce various cereals and vegetables into the diet. Note that in the bowl the food does not have to be constantly. Enough 15 minutes for the dog to eat its portion. Anything that remains after this period of time is considered superfluous. An adult dog is fed twice a day. In the process of feeding, experts advise alternating wet canned food and dry granules. Thus, the enamel on the teeth will remain intact for longer.
Breeding and estrus
Few people, when buying a thoroughbred female, do not think about future puppies. In our article, we will consider everything that you need to know about the physiology of a bitch.
First, we talk about estrus, it occurs in the period from 6 to 10 months. Its duration is from 21 days to 1 month. There are usually no more than 2 leaks per year. During this period, the dog often urinates, behaves uneasily. You can also notice swelling of the loop and the appearance of spotting. The owner of the dog should keep a pet heat calendar, in which it is worth noting the beginning and end of the cycle. If during this period you do not plan to knit a bitch, then walk with her on a leash.
Knitting
Now let's talk about knitting with an Arabic greyhound. The body of the animal is most prepared for carrying offspring and childbirth at the age of 2 years. It’s not worth bringing a dog before. A good time for conception begins on the 11th day of estrus, when spotting appears. This period lasts no more than 6 days. Before knitting a bitch, you need to walk it, but do not need to feed. A mated female lead to a male. This is an important condition for successful knitting. At first they introduce the animals, give them time to sniff. In the process, dogs can even run and play. In this case, do not disturb the animals. If the bitch is ready for conception, then mating will happen. In the process, the dogs stand in the castle for 20 minutes 1 hour, but they cannot be split. After a day, you should repeat the mating.
Pregnancy
Now let's talk about the pregnancy of an Arab hound. The duration of gestation in representatives of the breed is from 58 to 70 days. As a rule, pregnancy proceeds normally, and the behavior and appearance of the animal change only in the later stages. A pregnant dog needs good nutrition; its food rate should be increased one and a half times a day. And it is better during this period to increase the frequency of meals up to 4 times a day. Natural feeding dogs are prescribed special vitamins.
Childbirth
In order to be ready for childbirth, you need to prepare the following things:
- clean old rags that are not a pity to throw away are required for laying the dog;
- threads
- basin for the afterbirth;
- scissors;
- Libra;
- antiseptic spray (required for the treatment of the umbilical cord);
- box with a heating pad for puppies;
- notebook;
- handle and scales.
It is advisable to call a veterinarian at birth. A signal to the onset of labor is the excretion of colostrum from the mammary glands and their swelling. Before the start of the process itself, the dog behaves uneasily, looks for a secluded place, can scratch a bench, trying to arrange a cozy nest. At this point, you can notice a swelling of the loop, from which thick mucus stands out. Typically, the birth of representatives of the breed goes well. Only newly born puppies are weighed, weak ones are marked with a ribbon in order to artificially feed.
