Every second weekend of August is celebrated City Day in Kostroma. 2017 was no exception. We invite you to take a virtual time travel and celebrate this glorious event together with Kostroma.
Kostroma city: foundation
In 1152, Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, 301 kilometers from Moscow, founded the city, which subsequently spread on both sides of the Volga. It was named Kostroma. A town with a population of 276 thousand people is only 5 years younger than the capital, its history is rich in events and interesting facts.
The ancient Russian city attracts the attention of tourists, and in August 2017 there were especially many of them, because "Kostroma City Day" was celebrated here. And not another celebration, but the anniversary, 865 year since the founding of the city. On this occasion, and also taking into account that the coat of arms of the city of Kostroma turned 250 years old and the tourist route “Golden Ring” 50 years old, they carefully approached the events and prepared for them throughout the year. Festive events were held in the city for 4 days: from August 10 to 13.
The program of events for the City Day of Kostroma in 2017
The motto of the event can be arbitrarily designated the following phrase: "Dancing and sports, competitions and spectacles, delicious food." The holiday was held on a special scale, which pleased the guests of the city and its indigenous people. Even the sun could not spoil the mood of people. The anniversary festival “City Day of Kostroma” included more than 50 various events, both traditional and new.
The celebration started on August 10 with the opening of the heraldic exhibition “Coats of arms of the Kostroma province”. On August 11, events of a patriotic orientation took place: the procession "Immortal Battalion" and honoring Kostroma residents who died in Afghanistan and the North Caucasus. The celebration continued with a more positive “Honey Savior” and the opening of the sculptural composition “Love” on the embankment. On August 12, the lion's share of all events fell:
- championship in rowing and beach volleyball;
- folk crafts fair;
- theatrical festival "Blossom, Kostroma!";
- Streetball competition “Orange Ball”;
- sailing regatta “Who is who - Kostroma 2017”;
- festival "Sausage";
- theatrical "Jubilee WAY STEP";
- children's entertainment;
- master class in checkers and chess;
- CrossFit, armwrestling, power extreme competitions;
- dance marathon "Time to dance";
- entertainment "Cheese pokatushki";
- art festival;
- a concert of bell ringing and the Murakami band;
- Silver Rook is an international fireworks festival.
The holiday ended on August 13 with the Art Kostroma and Kostroma Flowers festivals, an interactive program, and a concert of symphonic music.
Waltz of the Flowers
The city hosts the annual festival-competition "Waltz of the Flowers." In 2017, he was dedicated to the City Day in Kostroma, his theme was “Bouquet of Kostroma”. All participants were awarded with memorable diplomas, but the best was determined by an unbiased and competent jury.
The composition “Forest Fairy” was created by florist U. Guzanova from moss, conquered all those present and took 1st place. On the 2nd - the collective work of teachers of the school №4 "Little Country", and on the 3rd - a joint creative project of teachers of the 20th lyceum.
In the preparation of unusual flower arrangements, family teams and participants of the TOC, collectives of Children's Youth Centers and educational institutions, and active residents of the city took part. The main winner of the festival has traditionally become Beauty, created by the hands of creative personalities.
Cheese pokatushki
At the City Day in Kostroma on Dairy Mountain there was an entertaining gastronomic competition "Cheese Pokatushki". Everyone could try their hand at rolling cheese heads for accuracy or range. Competitions were held in 4 groups:
- children’s;
- Men's
- Women's
- are common.
As in real competitions, the results were judged by the judges, and the winners received prizes. But the main objective of the event was still the goal of creating a festive, cheerful mood, making the audience laugh, “infecting” them with joy.
Theatrical procession
The program of the City Day in Kostroma included the holding of a theatrical procession “PUT-STEP”, which has become traditional here. The cheerful parade resembled a carnival procession and brought together about 1.5 thousand Kostroma citizens. In the festive columns, students and work collectives, athletes and pupils of children's centers walked side by side. The whole procession was divided into 3 columns:
- Ecological travelers led by Fedor Konyukhov;
- Cruise to childhood with his leader Gulliver;
- Travelers on the Golden Ring, headed by the sailor Athanasius Nikitin.
Participants began preparation in advance: they sewed special carnival costumes, composed and learned chants. The audience enjoyed the procession very much, took pictures, had fun, joked.
Fireworks Festival Silver Rook
The pyrotechnic show, held annually in the Volga River, is becoming increasingly widespread. Bright and unusually colorful festival takes part in both Russian and foreign teams of pyrotechnics. On City Day, the sky of Kostroma is illuminated by millions of lights and bright fireworks. The show lasts about 1.5 hours, and beautiful music accompanies it. “Silver boat” is reputed among the townspeople as one of the most favorite holiday events. In 2017, the "fiery" show was already 12 in a row.
