How and why does the cat purr?

This sound belongs to the most pleasant sounds in the world, not without reason many use it in psychotherapy and for meditation. We are talking about cat purrs now. Low vibrating frequencies are associated with warmth, comfort and, of course, with peace. But the most amazing thing is that scientists still have not guessed the wondrous secret how cats do it, what organs make this sound. At the moment, it is believed that this is due to the vibration of the hyoid bones located in the larynx of the animal. But it is known for certain why the cat purrs. And there were several reasons for this pleasant phenomenon. In general, purring is one of the most common ways of feline communication, and it is peculiar not only to domestic pets. Almost all cats can make such sounds, even the king of animals is a lion.

why is the cat purring

The most common hypothesis why a cat purrs is that at the moment she is just fine. She expresses satisfaction with life, satiety, calmness in such a simple way. No wonder the cat begins to purr, jumping on his knees to the owner, having received his portion of affection. So she expresses approval of human actions. For the same reason, one can often hear these amazing “melodies” when she is hungry and rushes ahead of the owner to the kitchen for food.

Often a cat purrs when he is raising his offspring. When kittens are next to her, she often, and for no apparent reason begins to purr. She does this for this reason: while the cubs are small and blind, they need maternal care all the time. But so far they cannot see and understand it. But they fully understand the sound signals with which their mother reassures them, as if to say: "Everything is fine, I'm close."

Another reason why the cat constantly purrs may be a stressful situation. For her, purring works, like human motion sickness, soothingly. And when the cat is under stress, if she is sick or experiences torment or discomfort, she can calm herself with just such an amazing sound. It is believed that in the process of purring in the cat's body endorphins are secreted, so this can be an indicator of the animal's excitement or, conversely, a state of euphoria.

But the reason why the cat purrs in the wild may be a manifestation of aggression. Wild cats, with purrs, indicate their willingness to attack the enemy. But in domestic congeners, purring in the presence of another animal can, on the contrary, serve as an expression of a friendly mood. So a cat can offer to play, show its predisposition and peaceful intentions. And sometimes even to say with a purr: "I am very weak, I do not need to be attacked."

As you can see, the reasons why the cat purrs are very diverse. Experienced owners of furry beauties in terms of timbre and intonation can distinguish the purring of their pets, depending on the situation. This skill comes with cat experience. But in any case, let your pet purr only from pleasure.
