Bukovinian shepherd has a strong, dense, large physique. For many centuries this dog was the only assistant to shepherds holding their herds in the Carpathian mountains. The main task of such a shepherd dog is to protect flocks and herds from predators or captors. Bukovinian shepherd is appreciated for its extremely balanced character, calm and friendly attitude towards children. These qualities of dogs make it possible to keep them not only as guards of herds, but also in city conditions for protection and as companions. This breed is one of the varieties of the Romanian shepherd shepherd.
Body type
The large, massive head of the dog is slightly raised above the line of the back. The skull is moderately wide, with a smooth transition from the forehead to the muzzle. The nose is wide, the lobe is black and large. The skull is equal in length to the muzzle. The muzzle has the shape of a truncated cone, while it is well developed, tapering to the nose, not sharp. The dog’s lips are tight to the teeth, thick, brightly colored. Scissor bite, white teeth, powerful jaws. Sometimes there are dogs with a direct bite - this is not a disadvantage of the breed. Bukovinian shepherd dog has weak cheekbones. The eyes are small, almond-shaped, located a little obliquely. Eye color may be hazel or lighter. Yellow eyes are not possible for this breed. The eyelids have good pigmentation. The ears are hanging, in the shape of a triangle, the tips are rounded, the landing is high, tight fit to the cheeks. The neck is thick, short, strong. The body is muscular, the croup is strong. From the withers to the croup, the decline is smooth. A broad chest with pronounced ribs reaches the elbows of the forepaws. The tail reaches the hock, sometimes longer. In the resting state, the tail is lowered; when tensioned or moved, it rises above the back line. The skin of the dog is thick, has a dark gray color. The coat on the legs and head is short, thick, straight. On the body, the wool is longer, up to 9 cm. The undercoat is characterized by increased density, short, light. On the neck, the hair is positioned so that it forms a mane. The back side of the legs is of medium length. The tail is fluffy, with long and thick hair.
Color
The Bukovinian shepherd dog (photo in the article) most often has a white color with spots, in which the border is clearly outlined. Spots can be black, sand or tiger. Legs may have colored or black specks. Black or white coat color is sometimes possible (but undesirable).
Temperament
The Bukovinian shepherd was bred specifically for the protection of herds, therefore its character is typical of shepherd / guard breeds. Dogs are calm, very loving children. Incredulity to strangers. Wild animals are not afraid, enter the fray without hesitation. Barking loud, very powerful. At night, dogs patrol entrusted territory. Adult dogs need a lot of space for walking.
