Reset DNS cache in Windows 7 and 10: instruction

It often happens that the Internet starts to work incorrectly - there are disconnections, a redirect to third-party or malicious services, or a complete lack of a service. This is not always associated with some kind of accident on the provider’s side, it is often necessary to check the settings on your own user equipment. One of the methods by which you can improve the quality of the connection is to flush the DNS cache. How to do this, we will describe in this manual.

In what cases is required

This manipulation is usually required in order to update the DNS records. Resetting the DNS cache is needed in the following situations.

  1. If new settings of the DNS server were registered - for example, you registered the addressing from Google instead of the one that was set by the provider or set automatically.
  2. When transferring the domain and data of a resource to another server - so that the resource is accessed correctly.
  3. With the systematic occurrence of errors, redirects to other services instead of those requested.

Generally, clearing the cache in this case can help to get things going. In a broad sense, it is a "cleaning" on the computer, which is well conducive to improving productivity.

Service Enable

First of all, you need to make sure that DNS is turned on, otherwise the configuration will not be able to be completed.

It is necessary to go to the complete list of all applications through the Start menu, then in the administration section go to the Services folder.

In this section you need to find the "DNS client", and then restart or enable this service using the right mouse button.

Reset via command line

The best method for flushing the DNS cache is to use command line functionality.

Call the command line - be sure to do this on behalf of the administrator, otherwise the result will be incorrect. You can do this through a search: enter "Command" in the search bar and find the desired item among the available applications that appeared. Run with administrative rights.

Enter the data on the command line, as in the screenshot below.

If you see the same message as in the screenshot, then the command is executed correctly. In order to consolidate the result, you can use the netsh winsock reset command additionally.

other methods

To reset the DNS cache on Windows 7, use the Win + R keyboard shortcut to go to the "Run" line and enter the services.msc command in it. You will be taken to the Windows Services Management window.

In the list that opens, you need to find the DNS client. Please note: on the left there will be an opportunity to click on the links that allow you to stop or restart this service.

Click "Restart" - done, the DNS cache is cleared.

This method is also relevant for resetting the DNS cache in Windows 10 (like the first one) - similar basic settings in these two operating systems are practically the same.

In addition, there are special utilities that allow you to perform the same functionality, but not with standard pre-installed tools of the operating system itself, but with the help of external resources. Such programs include, for example, NetAdapter Repair. Usually, utilities have an intuitive visual interface that allows the user to independently reset the DNS cache without any special difficulties.
