Color pencils - what are they? How to draw with them?

Which of us did not draw with colored pencils in our childhood? Probably few of them. And until now, some people believe that pencils are intended exclusively for children's art. However, those who think so are simply not interested in drawing as such.

In fact, colored pencils are a great tool for creating stunning paintings that are in no way inferior in terms of brightness and beauty to oil paintings or pastel drawings.

Today in the art market you can find a lot of all kinds of brands of pencils for beginner artists (including children), and for professionals. Their texture and colors are very different. There are hard and soft, translucent and matte, watercolor and pastel, as well as colored pencils, the consistency of which resembles wax. In addition, the color palette of many brands is very extensive. It includes not only the primary colors, but also many of their shades. This allows you to make the image as realistic as possible.

The technique of drawing with colored pencils is not very complicated, but it requires a certain amount of patience, since it is impossible to quickly paint over a large area of the surface with a thin stylus. Therefore, it would be nice to have both soft and hard pencils. Using soft pencils, painting is faster. In addition, depending on the pressure, you can make smooth transitions from a saturated, bright color to a subtle shade that is barely perceptible to the eye. In addition, a soft pencil after drawing lines can be easily rubbed on paper, creating color uniformity and an even smoother transition from one tone to another. Solid colored pencils are intended for more detailed drawing. Also, with their help, you can strengthen the shadows, if necessary. It is very important to periodically sharpen pencils so that the stylus is always sharp.

color pencil technique

Currently quite popular are watercolor colored pencils. They look like ordinary ones, but their “trick” is that if you use a soft brush dipped in water to paint over the shaded area, then the pigments will dissolve and you will get the effect of a real watercolor. Very original, unusual and picturesque paintings look that combine both washing and strokes.

It is important to remember that drawing with colored pencils virtually eliminates the possibility of correction, so you should be extremely careful. But you can still use a plastic eraser to fix minor defects. For example, if you accidentally forgot somewhere to designate a flare, it can be used to accurately remove part of the pigment. But it will have to be constantly cleaned so that it remains a little rough and able to remove the next paint coat.

Experienced artists skillfully "scrape" forgotten glare with a conventional blade, but this is done with extreme care to remove the thinnest layer of paper. By the way, paper for drawing with colored pencils is better to take quite thick. The one that usually happens in children's drawing albums is not suitable, because it is too thin and simply can not withstand heavy loads. The best option is pastel paper.
