Fictional and mythological characters entered our life tightly with the spread of the fantasy genre in the book, as well as in the gaming and film industries. Writers and screenwriters are not limited to just people - such races as elves, gnomes, orcs and others have long and densely settled in books, films and games. But there is another mythical race that appears on screens / pages quite often, namely dragons. They invariably play the role of great creatures, much wiser than humans.
However, depending on the role in history - wise mentors and assistants to the protagonist or antagonists - the description of this race also changes. Somewhere they appear greedy and evil, lying all day on a mountain of gold in the treasury and dreaming of the complete genocide of all other races. And somewhere, dragons are great creatures who know and remember many eras, which can save the hero in a difficult situation or suggest the right decision. And even in those stories where they remain neutral, it is difficult to ignore this race - they are always covered with a halo of mystery and mystery. Looking at them in different universes, you can make the top of the most powerful dragons from different worlds. However, first it is worth remembering where the legends about these creatures came from.
Origin
Dragons are present in the mythology of many countries. Their first references are found in Sumerian mythology, where these creations were presented in a completely different way than in our days, and were creatures of the original Chaos, forever fighting the Order. Also, the appearance of the dragon was extremely popular in China - it was identified with the Emperor, attributed to the creation of the world. This race found reflection in the form of giant snakes in the Aztec mythology: just one of them is the symbol of Quetzalcoatl, the god of the morning star.
However, the real "flowering" and the popularization of scaly came in medieval Europe. Alchemists revered them, and the symbol of the primal matter in alchemy was Ouroboros - a dragon biting his tail.
The most common plot in mythology is the fight of a knight / prince with a dragon guarding the beautiful princess. The huge beast symbolizes the difficulties that must be overcome in order to obtain the treasure, whatever they may be - the princess, wealth or favor of the overlord.
Middle-earth
Undoubtedly, talking about the most powerful dragons, you need to remember how it all began. The first dragons in the work of art appeared precisely in the works of Professor J. Tolkien, namely in the fairy tale "The Hobbit: There and Back." Then Smaug, the last dragon remaining at that time, seemed huge, and Tolkien skillfully revealed the character of this old and evil creature. However, later, reading his other works, it becomes clear: Smaug is one of the smallest representatives of his race, who once lived in Middle-earth.
According to the history of the world, the strongest dragon in it was Ankalagon Black - the first and greatest creation of the dark Val Melkor.
Dragons in Middle-earth initially served evil, because for this they were created, and Ankalagon was no exception. However, his fate as a result was very tragic for all the dark ones - during the War of Wrath, the troops of the world managed to hit him, and the dragon fell on Tangorodrim, Melkor fortress, destroying it.
"Game of Thrones"
In Game of Thrones, a television series released in America based on J. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire, dragons also have an important place in the story. It can be said for certain that the writer and scriptwriters assigned a considerable role to this race in the events that take place: the fact that the last existing representatives of the race chose Daenerys, one of the rulers of the ousted Targaryen dynasty, allows her to begin restoring the power of her kind.
The strongest one can be recognized as a dragon named Ballerion, also known as the Black Horror.
It belonged to Aigon the Conqueror during the War of Conquest. The ballerion was the largest and oldest dragon of the Targaryen and all of Westeros. He was so big that a shadow from him could cover the whole city.
TES Series
The RPG series The Elder Scrowls contains as many as five games, but the player manages to meet dragons only in the fifth, last part at the moment - Skyrim. It turns out that earlier they were dreamy, but Alduin, who returned from beyond the bounds of the world, was able to wake some of them. Most dragons are aggressive towards other races, and, quite possibly, they would be able to capture the world if it were not for Alduin’s brother, Parturnax. He taught mortals to use the Voice (dragon cries that can affect the world around them, including the one widely known outside the boundaries of the Tuum community). The most powerful dragon in this universe is Alduin - except for his father, a god who also has a similar shape.
The Witcher
It is worth noting that there are very few representatives of this race in this series of games and books, and it seems impossible to single out the strongest among them: dragons in the world of The Witcher are secretive and try not to get caught by people. This behavior is quite reasonable, since people prey on this race for the sake of different ingredients. However, you can still choose one. This is Villentretenmert, also known as the Borch Three Jackdaws. According to his words, he is the only golden dragon in the world, which makes him the strongest among all. After all, gold is not only stronger and faster than all others, but also has the unique ability to take the form of any creature.
It is also worth noting that you can’t meet Vilentretenmert in games, but you can meet his daughter - Saesentessis, also known as Saskia. The latter, although it has the shape of a man, is not a purebred golden dragon: her mother was a green dragon.
It is known that both Saskia and Villentretenmert are in the card game "Gvint", created on the basis of a screw from the game The Witcher 3.
Dark souls
Speaking of these dinosaurs, one cannot but recall a series of games about Dark Souls. According to the Soul Laura, dragons were the first creatures in the world. They were immortal and lived in peace and balance. This went on until the appearance of the Original Flame, dividing life and death, light and darkness. Then those who acquired the Souls of the Lords appeared - Gwyn, Nito, the witch Isalita and the dragon-traitor Naga Sith. Lords found weapons against their predecessors and destroyed the majority, starting the Age of Fire, during which the events of all three parts of the series take place.
Selecting the strongest of them in Souls games is very simple - just compare the characteristics of the bosses of this class encountered by the hero. Judged in this way, the most powerful is the Ancient Dragon.
You can find him in the second part of the series, in the Dragon Temple. The Ancient Dragon has approximately 20 thousand health points, which makes him one of the "thickest" bosses in the game.
