A bit of history
It is not officially known exactly how the American curl was bred. On this account, there are suggestions that this breed appeared as a result of a natural mutation, which in no way negatively affected the cat’s health - bending the ears of an animal does not harm him at all.
For the first time, a representative of the breed was spotted in the USA in 1981. In the city of Lakewood, California, the family lived - Joe and Grace Ruga. One fine day, they found a stray black cat with strange ears on its doorstep. They decided to leave her. After some time, the cat gave birth to kittens with the same bent ears. Then the spouses of Ruga came to the conclusion that they became happy owners of a new amazing breed. Two years later, they closely engaged in breeding cats with cute ears. The breed quickly became popular, and now the American curl is known in Europe and Asia.
Description of the breed: standards, health, character
The main standard and hallmark of the curl, of course, are the ears. They are open and bent back at an angle of 90-180 degrees, fluffy fur sticks out of them fervently. The color of the cat itself can be absolutely anything: from plain to striped. There are also such rare instances as a Siamese with bent ears in the style of "American Curl" (photo below).
Curls are distinguished by their enviable health due to the absence of any diseases transmitted at the gene level. Their strong, muscular body allows them to be very hardy and continue to jump briskly even in old age. You can often hear about curls that they are eternal kittens.
By nature, the American curl is very friendly and sociable. This curious and playful pussy will haunt you everywhere. Moreover, the curl will not demand attention to his person, but rather will try to take part in all household chores. And, by the way, thanks to its over-sociability, your furry friend will easily find a common language with other pets and with young children.
Care
Curls are unpretentious in leaving. They do not fade much, so they do not need to be combed out daily. Curls should be bathed as needed. The only thing you should pay attention to is bent ears. This feature should always be considered. Curl's open ears should be regularly cleaned of excess sulfur, taking care not to damage the fragile cartilage. Bending them in the opposite direction is unacceptable.
Curl kittens
Oddly enough, but the American Curl cat gives birth to kittens with absolutely straight ears. However, you should not be scared. Ears begin to bend as early as 3–6 days after birth. Their final formation occurs at 12–16 weeks. To make sure that you are offered a real little curl, check all the necessary documents and be sure to get acquainted with the kitten's parents (at least one of them).
