West Siberian husky. Breed features

These dogs are the pride of our hunting dog breeding, a true national treasure. Magnificent hunting qualities, endurance and unpretentiousness make them indispensable to assistants to hunters and amateur hunters. Hunting West Siberian husky was bred on the basis of local indigenous dog breeds that have developed over the centuries in the North of Russia. The breed standards were first approved in 1949. They changed twice. Currently, they use the standards adopted in 1996. In 1980, the International Kennel Federation also recognized this breed.  

Breed standards

From the ancestors, Khanty and Mansi huskies, the breed took the best. Dogs of a strong, but dry physique. Males according to the breed standard should have a height of 54 to 60 cm, and in females a growth of 2 cm less . As for the index of extension, it is equal to 102-108.

The color of the coat is white, gray, black, red or brown. Suppose speckled legs. A typical West Siberian husky has a dense hairline with a rough and straight spine. Her undercoat is soft and plentiful. On the neck and shoulders, the canine is developed and forms a collar. The hair on the head, ears and legs is short. On the paws of the hair forms a so-called brush. On the tail, the hair is evenly distributed, fluffy.

The head of the husky is wedge-shaped when viewed from above. The skull is moderately wide. The length of the muzzle and cranial part of the head are the same. There is a good manifestation of the occipital protuberance, a smooth transition from a moderately convex forehead to the muzzle. West Siberian Laika is truly beautiful. She has a characteristic muzzle with tight-fitting and dry lips. High set ears have the shape of a slightly elongated triangle. The eyes are brown, small, have a slanting characteristic incision, giving the dog’s face an expression of intelligence and guile.





The chests of the huskies are deep and wide. They are also characterized by a straight and wide back, a wide, spring-loaded lower back. Legs are straight, correctly set, toes are tightly pressed. The tail is almost the length of the hock or slightly shorter and is usually bent to the back in the form of a steep ring or sickle.

Features of the West Siberian husky

Dogs of this breed are animals with a moderately excitable type of higher nervous activity. By nature, the West Siberian husky is very independent. She is spiteful to the beast, but sociable towards people. It is believed that strict training with complete submission to the hunter is detrimental to the dog’s natural hunting qualities. When planning a husky upbringing, this must be taken into account. It can work both in animals and in birds, although it is traditionally more commonly used as a beast dog. Hunter-hunters sometimes prefer to drag it over any one kind of beast.

Having decided to buy a like, get ready for frequent and long walks if you are going to keep it in the apartment. The best place for keeping an adult dog is a spacious enclosure.

If you are a hunter, try to get a puppy from your parents with obviously good working qualities. When choosing from a litter, one should be guided by the following: the puppy's age should not be less than 1 month. The puppy should be well-fed, strong and mobile, accustomed to feeding, without visible defects. To choose the best puppy, lay them a few steps from the mother. The strongest and most brisk of them will be the first to find her.

Puppies of the same litter from parents with a pedigree usually get nicknames starting with a specific letter. This is done for the convenience of registering.
