The Xeon E5-2620 microprocessor for server computing systems first saw the light at the very beginning of 2012. It was manufactured according to the most advanced technological process at that time with tolerance standards of 32 nm and provided an uncompromisingly high level of speed due to the presence of 6 cores and an increased cache size. It is its parameters and specifications that will be considered in the article, and configuration options and possible use cases will also be given.

Quite a long time ago (by the standards of the modern computer industry), the Intel Xeon E5-2620 processor debuted in the mid-range server segment. Of course, PCs based on it still have a sufficient level of performance, but still their owners will be forced to carry out their comprehensive upgrade for the foreseeable future for two reasons. One of them is an outdated technical process and a high level of energy consumption. The second reason lies in the fact that new programs require 8 or more physical cores, and the Xeon E5-2620 is equipped with only 6 blocks of code processing. That is, in software that is optimized for 8 or more computing modules, its performance will be significantly reduced.





This CPU can be found in two delivery options. The first one is called TRAIL. In this case, the buyer acquired the CPU in a transport plastic box, an instruction manual, a sticker and a certificate of conformity. The second possible delivery option was called BOX. In this situation, the previously mentioned list was supplemented by a cardboard box, a cooler and a tube of thermal paste.

As previously noted, the Xeon E5-2620 microprocessor is equipped with 6 physical cores. Also, support for proprietary HT technology allows this chip to process program code in 12 threads. The initial nominal frequency of the CPU is 2.0 GHz. But also this chip can increase its value to 2.5 GHz depending on the load. Dynamic frequency control is provided by technology such as Intel's TurboBust.

The cache volume of the 1st level is 64 Kb, the 2nd - 1.5 Mb and the 3rd - 15 Mb. The microprocessor can operate with RAM standard DDR3. The recommended frequency of the models is 1333 MHz. The maximum RAM size is limited to 384 GB. It is also worth noting that moment that the RAM controller is four-channel and is able to provide a bandwidth of 42.6 Gb / s.

The characteristics of the Xeon E5-2620 indicated that its thermal package does not exceed 95 watts. The semiconductor crystal itself, as previously noted, was manufactured according to technological standards of 32 nm and had a surface layout.

Conclusion

At the time sales began, the Xeon E5-2620 provided a high level of performance, but now this microprocessor device is morally and physically obsolete. Therefore, it is not practical to use this chip model when assembling a new server. Also, old high-performance computers based on this chip need to be updated. Modern server software puts forward higher requirements for hardware and therefore such a processor in some cases will no longer cope with the tasks assigned to it.
