The cigarette holder is back in fashion. Who invented it? What is a mouthpiece for? How to make it? This will be discussed in the article. So...
What is a mouthpiece?
If we translate the word “mouthpiece” from German, we get two roots: mund (that is, “mouth”) and stück (“part”). So, it’s about the part of the mouth Yes. Today it is part of a cigarette called a filter. However, before the mouthpiece was a hollow thin tube made of wood. A cigarette was inserted into it.
When and by whom was the mouthpiece invented?
Tobacco was brought to Europe in 1496 from the island of Tobago. Smoked then only cigars. Soon, tubes also appeared. Tobacco was quite expensive, so the leftover smudges crumbled and wrapped in paper. These cigarettes were a prototype of modern cigarettes. They received special distribution in the First World War (tobacco was included in rations).
In 1865, a small shop with pipes was opened by two emigre brothers named Kapp in Dublin. About ten years, things went smoothly and smoothly, until a certain Charles Peterson appeared in the town. Soon he asked for companions with his brothers, and things went up: Peterson came up with a cigarette holder, which was evaluated at the World Exhibition, noting the invention with a gold medal. Capp & Peterson products are now selling amazingly beautiful products all over the world. I wonder if Charles Peterson suspected that an invention that was supposed to prevent tobacco from getting into his mouth would spread like that.
Requirements and differences
Smokers quickly realized that a cigarette holder reduces the strength of tobacco, and its taste is softer. In addition, a bitter crumb lingered in the tube, which would certainly get into the mouth when using cigarettes. Moreover, the fingers turned yellow less, the teeth were not so dark.
When the harm of smoking was assessed, it turned out that the cigarette holder reduces (albeit slightly, but still) the volume and activity of harmful substances inhaled by smoking. It turned out that the smoke, passing through the air corridor, cooled down, and part of the tar remained on the walls of the pipe. Some devices began to be equipped with filters that trapped harmful substances even more.
The mouthpiece for cigarettes can be made of various materials. The main thing is that it be indifferent, resistant to temperature, smoke and attractive in appearance.
Today, there are many types of mouthpieces (for cigarettes and cigars). They are distinguished by the following parameters:
- concepts (with filter, cooler);
- designs (taking into account length, thickness);
- material (ebonite, acrylic, wood, amber, animal bone, Mediterranean briar);
- technology (manual work, on the machine, stamped).
Mouthpieces for men and women
And now a little about the details. How is the male cigarette holder different from the female? I must say that this device became an element of sophistication during the introduction of the fashion for smoking women (XIX century). The graceful and sophisticated ladies with manicured fingers obviously did not go rough and thick mouthpieces. In addition, smoke soaked gloves, leaving an unpleasant odor and yellow spots. A long cigarette holder was designed to protect against these troubles. Yes, and he looked in ladies' thin fingers much prettier than men. The female cigarette holder turned into an accessory of the then fashionistas. It was made from fairly expensive materials - amber, mahogany. Inlaid mouthpieces were especially appreciated. Men by nature were more practical. Therefore, their mouthpieces were simpler and smaller. Firstly, it was more convenient to store them, and secondly, they were not as fragile as women.
With the advent of filter cigarettes, mouthpieces began to go out of use and only a few smokers remained in use. Today they are back in fashion. The mouthpiece with a cigarette filter is in greatest demand . Prices - for any wallet: from cheap (from 10 cu for men and from 15-20 cu for women) to rather expensive.
How to make a cigarette holder?
A product usually consists of three parts: a core, a so-called nipple, and a tip. Do not try to make a mouthpiece from improvised materials. Sometimes it is advised to pull the "insides" out of a pen or felt-tip pen and use a hollow tube. In no case! First, the tip should be tapered. To make it, you need bronze. The core may be made of any other material. And for a nipple sleeve, textolite or organizational material is suitable. In the details, drill the corresponding hole size and then connect. If the ebonite mouthpiece slips out of the cradle or is loose in it, heat the sleeve in boiling water and press it on a hard surface. The diameter will become larger and it will hold much denser.
For cleaning use special pastes. However, not everyone has them. An alternative is tooth powder. If you find it difficult to find it on sale, squeeze a little toothpaste onto a plate and wait for it to dry, and then mash it to a powdery state.
