The Day of Russian Chemical Forces was approved in 2006 on May 31 by Presidential Decree. The celebration takes place on November 13, on that day in 1918, chemical troops were formed. They appeared in accordance with the order of the Revolutionary Military Council of the republic, which ordered the formation of the first units for chemical protection in the army.

In order to train personnel in chemical protection authorities in 1918, narrowly targeted Moscow courses in military gas engineering were opened on December 5. In 1920, they were retrained at the Higher Chemical School. Already in 1923, the first gas mask teams appeared in rifle regiments.
By 1925, the final military control system for chemical troops was formed.
Chemical troops played a large role in the Great Patriotic War:
- conducted reconnaissance in order to determine the preparation of the enemy for a chemical attack ;
- timely warned their troops about the impending attack using chemical weapons ;
- contributed to ensuring the regular readiness of military units and units for combat missions when the enemy uses biological or chemical weapons;
- provided camouflage troops and objects with special smoke.
In the postwar years, these troops were given great responsibility. They were supplied with the latest equipment developed in a special research center.
The employees of the chemical defense forces showed themselves heroically, working in conditions of radiation hazard on the territory of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, during the counter-terrorist operation in Chechnya. In 1992, chemical troops began to be called the Russian Chemical Forces (radiation protection, chemical and biological defense troops).
Many more events took place before they began to celebrate the Day of Russian Chemical Forces with special honor. 2013 marked the beginning of this day on a grand scale.

In the era of peacetime, troops perform a number of important tasks:
- provide quality training for existing personnel;
- Prepare mobilization resources
- contain equipment, prepare equipment, biological protection equipment;
- a special management structure ensures the formation of compounds and units in the shortest possible time, in case of a threat of biological, radiation or chemical attack.
Service in the RKhBZ troops is considered one of the most difficult and dangerous, since it is necessary to work in conditions of possible infection and exposure.
