Fields in Word are the space that is located at the edges of a document. Any content in the file, be it text, image, or another element, is located in the work area inside these indents. If you change the size of the page margins, the workspace also changes.
The choice of ready-made templates
In order to change the width of the fields in Word, you can apply one of the available templates or create your own sets of fields and add them to the collection.
Ready-made field sets are located in the Layout menu or, if you have an earlier version of Word, in Page Layout. To select a template, click on the "Fields" button located in the upper left of the toolbar. A drop-down list will appear, from which you can select one of the field templates you are interested in.
If your document has more than one section, then the selected template will be applied only to the active section. To change the size of indents in all necessary sections, they should first be selected, and then apply the appropriate one to them.
Adding and Modifying Fields
To make a field in Word and change its parameters, click on Layout, and then select the Fields button. After that click on the line "Custom Fields". A window opens with the parameters, in which you need to specify the required size of the indents. To apply the changes, click OK.
If you want to adjust the size of the fields in Word by default, then specify the template you are interested in. Then click the line "Custom Fields". In the pop-up dialog box, make the necessary changes and click on the "Default" button. All changes will be saved as a template, and it will be applied to new documents.
You can also change the margins for a specific piece of text. To do this, you need to select the necessary part of the text, open the "Page Settings" with the mouse and enter the necessary parameters. After that, find the "Apply" line at the bottom and select "To selected text" in the drop-down menu.
It should be noted that most printers require a certain margin width for proper operation, since they do not print to the edges of the sheet. If you try to print a document with margins too small, you will receive a notification that the margins are outside the printable area.
If you do not want the text to be cut off at the edges when printing, press the "Fix" button in the pop-up window with a warning. This action will automatically change the width of the fields. If you skip the warning window, it will appear again the next time you try to print.
Adjust indentation width for different pages
If you need to print a text document on both sides, you should set the margins for even and odd pages. In this case, the Mirror Fields template, which is located in the Fields section, is best suited.
If you select this option, the indentation on the left page will be the same as on the right. This means that the inner and outer margins of these sheets will be the same.
To replace the default values of mirror fields, go to "Custom Fields" and specify the necessary parameters in the "Inside" and "Outside" lines.
Creating Binding Fields
In order to add binding to printed pages, when working with a document in Word, you need to create additional fields on the side, above and inside the sheet. It is this space that will be used for binding, and thanks to it, the text remains visible after binding.
To add fields, go to the "Layout" section and click on "Fields". In the pop-up menu, click on "Custom Fields", and then specify the binding parameters in the corresponding line. Here you can also choose a location: top or left.
How to display and remove fields in Word
Word has the option to display the fields on the page as an additional line. To do this, click on "File", and then on the line "Options". After that, click on the "Advanced" menu, find the line "Show text borders" on the right and check the box next to it.
Now in an open document, field boundaries will be indicated by a dashed line.
Also, if necessary, indents on the page can be completely removed, but doing this is highly discouraged. Firstly, because when printing part of the text at the edges will be cut off, and secondly, this is a violation of the rules of documentation.
To remove the margins, go to "Custom Fields" and set the minimum value for all indents. Then click on the "OK" button to apply the settings.
How to remove the patch field in Word
There are several ways to delete a patch field. The first is to accept the changes. To do this, go to the "Review" tab and click on the "Next" button in the "Changes" tool group. You will then be redirected to the first comment, which you can accept or decline. After accepting or rejecting the comment, the field will be deleted.
You can accept or reject all changes at once by clicking on the “Accept” or “Reject” button among the “Changes” tools and select “Accept all corrections” or “Reject all corrections” in the corresponding drop-down menu.
Notes can also be deleted using the "Delete" button, which is located in the "Notes" tool group.
