Why is the file not copied to the USB flash drive? Solution to the problem

Flash drives have long replaced digital disks as portable storage devices. However, there are also problems with such convenient devices. Often they are associated not with mechanical damage, but with systemic ones. In this article you will find out why the file is not copied to the USB flash drive and what can be done about it.

Can't copy a file to a USB flash drive?

Possible reasons

First, we list the main problems that may interfere with copying:

  • Incorrect file system
  • not enough space;
  • the presence of viruses;
  • section system errors.

Consider each of the options in more detail.

File system change

Most flash drives are formatted in the FAT16 or FAT32 file system, which do not support data larger than 4 GB. Since many users drop large files, such as movies or archives, onto the drive, the device simply does not accept them. To fix this, format the media in the NTFS file system:

  1. Open the explorer and click RMB on the connected flash drive.
  2. In the menu, select "Format".
  3. In the window that opens, set NTFS in the "File System" and click on the "Start" button.
  4. After that, we confirm the action and wait for the end of the procedure.

If, after the steps are taken, the file is still not copied to the USB flash drive, then proceed to the next method.

Why is the file not being copied?

Place check

Perhaps you were inattentive when copying data, so the size of your file exceeds the free space or the total amount of the flash drive. This is usually indicated by the notification of the operating system when trying to transfer. You can also manually check the need for freeing up memory.

To do this, open "My Computer" and go to the properties of the flash drive through the context menu. Here is the total size and space occupied. Now we go to the file and also open its properties to find out the size. If necessary, you can get rid of excess information on a flash drive or format it completely, as indicated in the previous paragraph.

Viral infection

The next option is often found in cases where the device is transmitted to different users too often. When you connect it to a computer, you must initially check for viruses, and only then open the contents. If you can’t transfer the file to a USB flash drive and vice versa, be sure to scan the drive with antivirus software.

Section Errors

This option is difficult to detect with the naked eye. For scanning, you will need to use the standard Windows analysis tool.

Open the drive properties window and go to the "Service" tab. Here we click on the "Check" button. To run the test, you must have administrator rights. After completing the procedure, the operating system will try to correct the errors that have occurred.
