It would be more correct to say the yagd terrier. This breed comes from Germany. German breeders did everything to bring out the ideal hunter. But excellent working qualities bring a lot of trouble to those owners who do not think to roam with a gun and a dog through the woods. And if these people live in apartment buildings, where cats run around the yards, it seems that they can not avoid problems. In order not to spoil relations with neighbors, the pet will always have to be driven on a leash. Because the hunting terrier will never be a sofa dog. As, by the way, and a member of the family. He is too independent, and does not need human attention.
Origin and ancestors
The breed Yak Terrier (Deutscher Jagdterrier) is quite young. It was bred in the 20-30s of the twentieth century for burrowing. But the yagd terrier showed its excellent qualities not only in foxes, raccoons and badgers. You can also go with him on a hare, small ungulate animals (roe deer, wild goats), and even a wild boar. It is difficult to say in what type of hunting this terrier shows itself better - the range of its use is very wide. The dog runs excellently, follows a bloody trail, scares and feeds a shot bird from the water. To bring the perfect killer with excellent instinct, quick reaction, anger towards the beast and endurance, German breeders crossed old English terriers, light and black foxes. The honor of breeding a new breed belongs to Herbert Lakner.
Standard
Despite the fact that the breed was bred before the Second World War, its standard was approved only half a century later - in 1981. But even before that, in the 70s of the last century, the yak terrier gained distribution and popularity among hunters in our country. This is a small dog. The breed is considered to be small, but the difficult character and the angry disposition of representatives does not allow it to be ranked as “female”. The height at the withers of the gentlemen is 32–40, and of the ladies 30–38 centimeters. The format is slightly elongated, the skeleton is very dense, but the dog does not look like a dachshund. An elongated head and lean physique give it grace. At the same time, the yagd terrier is a lump of muscles, which a rapid reaction always directs in pursuit of game.
Subspecies
As for the suit, the accepted standard recognizes black, dark gray and brown colors. Allowed tan. As usual with purebred dogs, the standard recognizes several varieties of yagd terrier: smooth and wire-haired. Subspecies differ only in the nature of the hairline. In addition, the Wirehair Yakterrier must have a beard. The muzzle of the dogs is slightly shorter than the cranial-parietal part, the jaws are strong, well defined. The tail should be docked by a third, sit high on the croup with a slope back. The ears are small, placed high on the head, down the kink to the cheekbones. Strong breasts descending to the level of the elbows, widely spaced hind legs that are shorter than the front, and small evil eyes complement the appearance of this dwarf killer.
Yak Terrier as a pet
In vain, the townspeople think that affection and love will calm a violent dog. After all, it was not for nothing that the breeders worked to bring out a first-class hunter. Everything that runs or flies introduces the yagd terrier into the excitement of the chase. This dog also has protective qualities. However, he will be angry not only to strangers, but also to living creatures from his yard - a bird, cats and a larger "game". The yak terrier very often recognizes only one owner (usually more strict), other family members do not care and even aggressively. Without hunting, it gets worse, and its uneasy nature becomes even more malicious. Work with a dog handler and tough training are simply necessary for socialization. But the dogs have excellent health, easily tolerate Russian frosts. Hereditary diseases in this breed are absent.
