Alt-codes of characters are important components when typing text documents. The thing is that users sometimes have to insert various special characters into words. With their help, various formulas, mathematical records, and so on, are drawn up. But how to use the "Alt" codes? Where to find them? Answers will be given below. In fact, everything is simpler than it seems.

How to use

Alt-codes of characters are special numeric combinations, during the processing of which they are converted into characters. They are used with the Alt key held down. In Ubuntu, to work with the corresponding codes, you must click on Compose.

That is, you have to act like this:

  1. Enable the "Nam Lock" mode on the keyboard.
  2. Find out the Alt code of a character.
  3. While typing, hold down "Alt", and then dial the number combination of the character using the keyboard panel on the right.

In general, character codes with Alt are decimal and hexadecimal. The first input option was considered. What to do with hexadecimal combinations?

This will require:

  1. Activate Num Lock. This step is required for both cases.
  2. Type the hexadecimal character code in the text. It is called Unicode.
  3. Hold Alt and H on the keyboard.

The code will be processed, after which it will be converted to a particular character. There is nothing difficult or incomprehensible in this. For example, the combination Alt + 1 puts the following sign in the text - ☺.

If desired, users can find Alt-codes of characters in the "Symbol Table" of Windows. This will require:

  2. Click on "All Programs".
  3. Look in the "Accessories" and open the "Utilities" folder.

  5. Find one or another special character and highlight it.

Look at the bottom of the window. On the right there will be a combination of keys of the Alt + ... type. The code after the "Alt" is a decimal identifier.   1. Open a text editor and expand the "Insert" menu item.
  2. Select the "Symbols" option.
