Blood from the nose during pregnancy

Pregnancy is a very difficult physiological process in which almost all the organs of a woman undergo certain changes. Some changes are harmless enough (for example, swelling of the chest and roundness of the body). But there are those about which it is simply necessary to inform your therapist or gynecologist. Blood from the nose during pregnancy refers to just such cases.

Blood from the nose of pregnant women is quite frequent and seems to be a harmless phenomenon in our everyday life, so we do not always attach importance to it. But in vain, because the causes of the appearance of blood can be threatening to health. Especially if it is nosebleed during pregnancy.

A runny nose with blood during pregnancy is also quite common in expectant mothers. The thing is that an increase in the level of female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) can lead to an increase in blood flow through the nasal mucosa. From such an overload, it often swells and becomes thinner and friable. As a rule, many pregnant women notice nasal congestion and swelling, shortness of breath, arising for the same reason. Under the influence of external factors, the vascular network becomes somewhat more sensitive, and blood discharge from the nose can be quite frequent. This should not be delayed and you must immediately tell your gynecologist. He can prescribe various drops or ointments that will strengthen the walls of blood vessels.

Another factor in the appearance of blood from the nose during pregnancy is an increase in pressure, in particular arterial pressure. This reason is more dangerous, it may well lead to the onset of premature birth or adversely affect the uteroplacental circulation. If the pressure rises or falls by 10-20 orders of magnitude, you must immediately take medical help. Symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, headaches, flickering before the eyes, tinnitus, weakness are also possible.

Most often, patients who have nosebleeds during pregnancy are asked to undergo a blood coagulation test. If he showed any abnormalities, it is necessary to consult a hematologist. With often high blood pressure, constant monitoring by a doctor (often inpatient treatment) and constant use of medications to reduce it are necessary.

All of the above reasons for the occurrence of blood from the nose during pregnancy are quite dangerous. But we are not able to change them. More often, everyday situations, such as worsening or sudden changes in weather conditions, visiting a sauna or bathhouse, being in the open sun or in a stuffy room, accidental injury, and much more become the cause of bleeding. Often, bleeding is not profuse, only from one nostril, is not dangerous for a pregnant woman.

Consider how you can quickly stop blood from the nose during pregnancy:

1. It is necessary to moderately tilt your head back in a sitting position. A strong tilt of the head is undesirable, in order to prevent blood from entering the nasopharynx.

2. Place a damp wet towel or ice on the bridge of the nose.

3. It is forbidden to blow your nose, as this prevents the formation of a blood plug that can stop bleeding.

4. If the blood does not go too abundantly, then the nose is pinched with two fingers and slightly lifted up (after a couple of minutes, bleeding usually stops).

5. If the bleeding is profuse, apply to the nose or introduce a cotton swab moistened with hydrogen peroxide (3% solution). After that, the patient is immediately hospitalized.

Blood from the nose during pregnancy is not uncommon, unfortunately. Bad ecology, bad habits and frequent overwork can make this symptom quite common.
