Why does the internet not work on a laptop?

Reduced connection speed or the complete lack of Internet on various gadgets is a fairly common phenomenon. And usually there are two answers to the question why the Internet does not work on a laptop or desktop computer:

  • There were some problems on the provider line. As a result, this led either to a deterioration in the quality of communication, or to its complete loss.
  • One of your devices, distributing or connected to the Internet, has encountered an error in its operation or has been damaged and malfunctioning. As a result, there is no possibility of connecting to the global network.

This article will explain why the Internet does not work on a laptop, and what to do to fix it.

Global check

The first thing that needs to be done after the Internet has disappeared on a computer or laptop is to check the other devices connected to the home network. If they do not find Wi-Fi, then the problem is either with the router or with the provider. And before you call the latter, it’s worthwhile to understand the device for providing the Internet.

Restart

If the Internet via Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop and other devices that are connected to the network, then you should reboot the router:

  • disconnect the device from power;
  • wait from 30 seconds to five minutes;
  • turn on the power and wait until it is fully loaded;
  • check for connection.

Often, the cause could be a simple hang of the router itself. However, if this does not help, it’s worth moving on to complicated ways to fix the problem.

Work with settings

If a simple reboot of the device did not produce any results, it is worth performing a factory reset. Perhaps, during the operation of the router, they changed, and this led to the fact that the Internet on the laptop is slow or completely absent.

To perform the reset procedure, follow this algorithm:

  • on the back of the router, find the button labeled Reset;
  • hold it and do not let go for about 15 seconds;
  • wait until all lights stop burning;
  • after the device starts up again, check the Internet.

DHCP Server Settings

If the Internet on the laptop does not work well and the problem is still with the router, then try to configure DHCP. To do this, run the following algorithm:

  • On a laptop that is on a Wi-Fi network, launch a browser. In it, enter the login and password that are listed on the router case. Factory data is necessary because a reset was previously performed;
  • go to the DHCP settings;
  • enter the start and end IP addresses here. These numbers can be found in the same place as the login with a password. The numbers must fully correspond to what is indicated on the router. The last digit can be any except one.

If none of the methods with the router helped, then you should contact your provider. If there is no malfunction on the line, repair or replace the device.

Now you can move on to the reasons why the Internet does not work on a laptop, if the router is working and all devices on the network have a stable connection.

Computer restart

In the event that the connection to the network on the portable device is weak or completely absent, then you can try to perform the most banal way to fix many errors - restarting the system. For this:

  • close all programs and applications;
  • activate the Start menu by clicking the corresponding button on the taskbar;
  • Find the shutdown icon and click on it. In the list, select "Restart";
  • after the procedure is completed, check the connection.

If this action does not bring any results and the Internet on the laptop does not work, go to the next way to correct the situation.

Reconnecting

The second is a fairly simple option to fix the problem of weak or absent Internet on a laptop with a working router. If the reboot is useless, try reconnecting to the network. For this:

  • in the right part of the taskbar, find the Internet icon (in the same place where you can see the time, date, speaker volume) and activate it;
  • the network control panel will open, where a list of available connections will be indicated;
  • at the very bottom of the window there will be three buttons. One of them (the very first) is responsible for connecting to the network. Click on it;
  • the laptop will disconnect from all communications;
  • wait a few seconds and click on the button again. Wait for the list of available Internet connection points to load;
  • Find among them the necessary and try to connect to it.

If this does not help, it’s worth moving on to more complex ways to fix the lack of internet on your laptop.

Potentially dangerous

Many users are confident that the antivirus is able to provide them with safe and stable work with documents and files on the Internet. However, in practice, many of them are faced with the opposite. The program marks scanned files as dangerous and refuses to download them, while viruses go undetected.

The next reason that the Internet does not work on a laptop may be installed antivirus. Most likely, the firewall running in it (it is a firewall) simply blocked the connection of a particular laptop, considering it dangerous. This problem is solved by simply disabling the antivirus. Consider this using the Windows Defender example:

  • run the Windows Settings program;
  • in its window, go to the update and security section;
  • go to the Windows security tab here;
  • from the list on the right side of the screen, select and activate the "Firewall and network protection" parameter;
  • a new routine will open;
Firewall settings

  • on the right in the window, go through each of the sections and turn off the firewall.
Disabling Firewall

If this action helped, then remove the old antivirus and replace it with a more reliable option. Or stop using it at all (at your own peril and risk). The program often loads the processor with third-party tasks and may not see many viruses. But at least some protection will still be provided.

Network check

The tenth version of the Windows operating system has a lot of features that allow you to independently fix some of the problems that often occur when working with a computer. One of them helps to fix connection errors when the Internet does not work on a laptop. To run the diagnostics, follow the algorithm below:

  • on the taskbar, open the list of available networks by clicking on the Internet icon;
  • click on the line of network and internet parameters here. There will be a transition to the appropriate settings;
  • the very first status bar will open in front of you. Here it is necessary to proceed to the adapter settings section;
  • a subprogram window opens, in which a list of connected adapters is displayed;
  • select the one that provides your Internet connection, and double-click on its icon;
  • after opening another window, click on the diagnostic button and start the process itself;
  • wait until the automatic scan is completed, and then read the results provided by the system. In the event that some problems were resolved during the test, then it is worth trying to reconnect to the Internet.

Intervention in settings

If none of the options turned out to be useful, then you should try to fix the connection settings yourself. This is done in this way:

  • using the above algorithm, go to the list of network adapters;
  • having selected the necessary one, click on it with the right mouse button;
  • in the list that appears, select the section called "Properties". He will be the last;
Network Adapter Settings Properties

  • a window opens with a list of components that the current connection uses;
  • among them, find the IPv4 protocol and go to its properties;
Change the setting for working with IP and DNS

  • in the new subroutine, it is necessary to set tokens opposite the option to automatically obtain IP and DNS addresses (two lines), if they have not been installed earlier;
  • Check if the laptop is connected to the Internet.

New connection

It also happens that the Internet (WiFi) does not work on the laptop after the operating system has been re-installed. In this situation, you need to create a new connection yourself. For this:

  • go to the network and Internet settings through the icon on the Start menu bar;
  • on the page that opens, select the penultimate item, written in dark color;
Network settings

  • in the window that opens, activate the line for creating and configuring a new connection;
Connection Settings

  • next - change the settings for connecting to the Internet;
Create a new connection

  • Follow the steps that the program will ask of you;
  • after all the required actions have been completed, you should have a new connection to the Internet.

If this does not help and the Internet on the laptop does not work via Wi-Fi or through a direct connection, then it is worth checking the operability of the network card of your device. Try updating drivers. If there are no results, use the services of a service center.
