Lord of Moria - Balin, son of Fundin

Balin, the son of Fundin, is the oldest gnome in the squad assembled by Thorin Oakenshield and Gandalf. Together with twelve gnomes, one wizard and one hacker-cracker, Balin became part of an important quest for the return of the Lonely Mountain. He was always brave and at the same time gentle. After the events in The Hobbit, Balina was waiting for a new journey. This time he went deep into the ancient gnome kingdom called Khazad Dum.

Early biography

Balin, the son of Fundin, was born in the Third Age in 2763. Many of his friends with his younger brother, Dwalin, are familiar with the movie The Hobbit. The clan of their entire family came from Durin.

From early childhood, Balin considered the Lonely Mountain to be his home. At the time of the attack of the Mountain by Smaug (2770), he, like Torin, was lucky enough to be outside and, accordingly, to avoid imminent death. His father, Fundin, died during the Battle of Azanulbizar (2799).

The gnomes who survived the tragedy had to wander for a very long time - until they decided to settle in the Blue Mountains. Among them was Balin.

Hiking to Lonely Mountain

In total, Balin, the son of Fundin, took part in two trips to the Lonely Mountain. The first campaign took place in 2841 and was organized by Train, while the second - led by Torin - only happened a hundred years later.

Balin was the only gnome who agreed to go along with Bilbo through a secret passage leading to Smaug's lair. He was also one of the survivors of the Battle of the Five Armies.

In 2989, Balin decided to leave Erebor and go with a detachment of volunteers to Moria (Khazad-Dum). It was there that he was able to discover the mithril and Durin's Ax. Unfortunately, the colony of gallant gnomes managed to survive for only five years. Balin was shot dead by an orc archer in November 2994 when he was in Azanulbizar. His grave is in Moria.
