Medic Day in Russia, as well as in many former Soviet republics, is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. This holiday is relatively young. It was first noted in 1981, after the adoption of the corresponding Decree by the Presidium of the
Supreme Soviet of the USSR . Its official name is Medical Worker's Day.
On this day, colleagues and patients, friends and relatives of people involved in this field give them gifts and bring the most sincere congratulations, because this is one of those professions whose representatives save a person’s life in the literal sense of the word. One way or another, we all face physicians throughout our lives. And if we or our loved ones get really sick, we grab onto the phone and call the doctors in the hope that they will come and ease our suffering. And they rush to help us with the siren turned on and do everything to make us feel better.
The medical profession is one of the oldest in the history of mankind. Ancient people were still engaged in healing: at first they tried to do something to calm their own pain, and then they began to try to help their fellow tribesman. It was at that moment when one person began to care about the health of another, the profession of a doctor was born. Experience and knowledge in the field of medicine have been accumulated for thousands of years and in the end have come to the modern level of development. In order to become a modern doctor, you need to study for a long time, then have an internship and only after that you can get the right to be called a doctor.
I would like to remind you that the Day of Medic in Russia is celebrated not only by doctors, but also by nurses, laboratory assistants, orderlies, nurses and other “people in white coats” who have something to do with medicine. Indeed, in our time it is a vast industry, which includes science, business, government agencies, the service sector and many other related industries. According to the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, at the beginning of 2013, 2 million 162 thousand medical workers were involved in industry organizations.
Medic Day in Russia does not have a specific calendar date. The same story is with Teacher’s Day, Accountant’s Day and many other professional holidays. Therefore, every year it is necessary to redefine when the Medic Day is celebrated. The number can be viewed in the professional calendar, where it is usually highlighted in red. If you do not have a specialized calendar, count the third Sunday of June and go for flowers and sweets. 2013 Medic Day was celebrated on June 16th.
The state is trying to financially support medicine, rightly believing that the general state of the nation’s health,
life expectancy of the citizens and increased birth rate depend on the high level of professionalism of its employees, on the worthy technical equipment of the process, on the comfortable working conditions of physicians and the conditions for patients in medical institutions. The national project “Health” was developed, which included many activities aimed at maintaining the industry.
According to the tradition that has developed in recent years, before celebrating Medic Day, Russia is awarded the national prize "Calling", the founder of which was the "Health" program. The award is given in several categories: for saving a person’s life during surgery, for opening a new medical method and a new medical direction, for loyalty to the profession and others. Over the course of its existence, more than three hundred doctors from all over Russia have become prize laureates.
