Tweed yarn: description, features, reviews

Handicraft shops offer craftswomen a wide selection of yarn, which varies in composition, thickness, color. A worthy place on the shelves is tweed yarn. What is she and why did she attract knitters?

What is tweed?

Tweed is a popular type of yarn, a characteristic feature of which are multi-colored blotches in a monophonic thread. This material is associated with many classic knitwear (warm sweaters and cozy sweaters). It is multi-colored blotches that give the monophonic thing the very zest.

Clothes from such material will probably be chosen by those who prefer the British style in clothes and restrained elegance.

Appearance story

Tweed yarn was invented in Scotland in the town of Harris. It was there that many years ago they began to make the classic harris-tweed. It was a thick yarn, which included only sheep’s wool. A characteristic feature of harris tweed was the uneven thread thickness and small color inclusions. The colors of the filament and inclusions were uniform, since only natural dyes were used for dyeing. However, the main merit of tweed clothing was not at all attractive. From such a thread, excellent men's sweaters and sweaters were obtained that reliably protect against wind and cold in mountainous areas.

As for the name, there are immediately 2 assumptions. According to the first, yarn was named after the Tweed River, flowing on the border of England and Scotland. The second version is related to the confusion caused by the yarn supplier. Due to slurred handwriting, the word tweel (twill weaving), written on the packaging, the recipient read as tweed. Since then, the name has been firmly entrenched in this yarn.

Modern tweed yarn

Since the creation of tweed, the production of knitting threads has become more advanced. Manufacturers have learned how to make perfectly even threads, use natural and artificial fibers in the process, and dye yarn in absolutely any color (even the brightest). Therefore, knitters can choose the material for knitting, based on their own preferences.

Usually, tweed yarn for knitting, made mainly from natural wool, has muted shades, and threads with a high content of artificial fibers are brighter.

Blotches usually have a contrasting color. If the thread itself is made in gray, beige or any other light color, then the inclusions can be black, dark blue. In a dark thread, the opposite is true.

What to knit from tweed?

It is difficult to make a mistake when choosing a tweed, because this type of yarn is suitable for creating any thing that will be worn in the off-season and winter cold. The list will include:

  • sweatshirts;
  • sweaters;
  • tunics
  • hats (tweed caps look very original);
  • Scarves
  • coat.

From thick threads original things are obtained in a slightly brutal, “rustic” style. To create delicate and sophisticated garments, it is worth giving preference to thin yarn.

Things connected by a stitch in a tandem with tweed yarn will look more original, however, tweed can be maximally revealed and show its non-triviality only in a three-dimensional drawing. That is why for such a thread it is worth choosing braids, “bumps”, “gum” and all kinds of Arana.

Tweed yarn: reviews

Trinity yarn

In the list of benefits were noted:

  • low price (for comparison, the cost of tweed yarn from foreign manufacturers was taken into account);
  • 100% wool in the composition - this makes things soft, very warm;
  • easily knits, the thread is soft and elastic;
  • after washing the finished product, the threads swell slightly, a fluffy layer appears.

However, tweed trinity yarn has some disadvantages:

  • not all threads in this line have a tweed effect, some types are more similar to melange;
  • the finished product is prickly (this is not so much a drawback as a feature of woolen yarn).

Yarn with tweed effect - original, allowing you to create warm and beautiful things. However, like any woolen material, it has some features that are worth exploring before buying.
