Penumbra: Obituary. Game Review

Unofficial sequels to your favorite gaming franchises are often worthy to stand in line with their masterminds. One such example of good fan-made modifications is Penumbra: Obituary. The game returns all fans of the series to an already familiar world, saturated with the atmosphere of real fear and horror.

The developers from CounterCurrent Games really did their best - the sequel is in no way inferior to the original parts of Penumbra. Players will encounter new monsters, meet already familiar characters and, finally, learn about what happened to Philip.

Plot

The events of Penumbra: Obituary will start from the moment Requiem ends, where Philip’s final encounter with an unknown creature took place. The hero comes to his senses and realizes that he was not able to recover from the infection, since the vaccine taken did not give the desired effect. The virus begins to progress, but Philip does not lose hope of salvation.

A little later, Dr. Anabel Swanson gets in touch, from which the hero finds out that he actually did not kill anyone. The previous meeting with Anabel turned out to be the fruit of hallucinations caused by the virus - a voice called Clarence is immediately recognized in this. In addition, a rescue expedition is about to arrive, which means that Philip and Dr. Swanson have a chance of salvation.

Atmosphere

"Obituary" managed to maintain the spirit of past games in the series, creating the same dark and frightening atmosphere. Particularly loyal fans will be happy to find some similarities with the first chapter of Overture, with the main passage of Penumbra: Obituary unfolding in the scenery of Black Plague.

Obituary is the true finale of the entire Penumbra series, and it really feels. The atmosphere of loneliness, helplessness and despondency is brought to its peak. The implementation of the sound range deserves special attention, therefore, for the effect of complete immersion, we strongly recommend that you go through this creation with headphones.

Game process

When creating the Obituary, it was decided to use an engine identical to the game from the Amnesia series. Despite this decision, the style and surroundings of the sequel are fully consistent with the real Penumbra.

The game "Penumbra: Obituary". Overview

For all the passage, the player will encounter two or three truly terrible moments, each of which is capable of plugging all the previous parts of the series at once into the belt.

We will not be able to use the luminous greenish stick (HIS), therefore, a flashlight and several false lights will come to replace it. In order for the atmosphere in the Obituary to be always in suspense, the developers decided to make technical "sacrifices" and remove the eternal source of light. As a result, we will spend most of the gameplay in dark rooms, simultaneously trying to find spare batteries and avoid an undesirable meeting with the monster.

Speaking of opponents, Penumbra: Obituary continues to be used in its gameplay monsters, zombies that appeared in the Black Plague. In addition to them, we will also meet with a new variety of monsters - bald humanoid creatures, albino, rapidly moving on all fours. Fans of the series can remember these monsters on various artworks that flashed here and there during the release of Overture. Of course, the reasons why the developers from the FrictionalGames studio abandoned these albinos in the final version of the game are unknown, but their appearance in the Obituary cannot but rejoice. In addition, familiar opponents in the form of spiders and infected dogs were also taken from Overture.
