Users who are accustomed to working with operating systems of earlier versions (for example, Windows 7) know that the “My Computer” icon (or simply “Computer” in a later version of the OS) is on the desktop. But when using Windows 10, it often happens that this icon by default is simply not there. In this article, we will examine how to fix this and return the familiar shortcut.
The easiest way
In order to find out where to find “My Computer” in Windows 10, you need to use the right mouse button to click anywhere on the desktop.
You will see the usual menu, in it you need to go to the "Personalization" section. In this menu you must select "Themes". After that, on the right there will be an opportunity to select the line "Desktop Icon Settings" - we need it.
A settings window will open, in which the main shortcuts that you can place on the Windows desktop, including "My Computer", will be displayed on top. Check the boxes for all the labels you would like to see on the screen. After that, you need to make sure that the changes are saved, for this, click "Apply", and then OK.
Done. You can minimize all the windows and make sure that the necessary icon appears, now you can easily get to the "My Computer" section.
Using the Run line
Another way to find “My Computer” in Windows 10 is to use the Run function.
In order to get into this window, you need to simultaneously press two keys on the keyboard: the Win key (the Windows system logo is usually shown on it) and the English letter R.
At the bottom left you will see the corresponding line “Run”, into which you can enter any desired command.
Enter the data shown in the screenshot below.
Confirm with OK that the command is running.
After you do this, the exact same window will open as in the previous paragraph. Further, the procedure is similar: select the necessary items, including "My Computer", and confirm the action.
Icon recovery through the registry
This method is already a little more complicated, however, to have such knowledge is quite useful. You need to go back to the "Run" line and enter the regedit command in it. You will be taken to the registry editor.
It contains a list of directories on the left, you need to go through the files in exactly this sequence: first press HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then Software, then Microsoft and then on the following list: Windows - CurrentVersion - Explorer and, finally, Advanced.
In the list on the right we find the HideIcons parameter, double-click on it. He will need to set a value equal to zero. After this is done, you need to restart the computer. Once it is turned on, you will find the necessary system icons on the main screen.
If you want to return everything as it was, go to the registry in the same way and write one instead of zero.
So, with this simple instruction, you will know how to find “My Computer” in Windows 10 and put this shortcut on your desktop for future reference.
