Different fabrics are created by various methods of weaving threads. The properties and appearance of the material depend on their mutual arrangement. Here, in particular, is the difference between poplin and satin and other fabrics: the principle of plain weaving is used in its production. This is the most simple pattern, in which the longitudinal (warp) and transverse (weft) threads overlap each other in a checkerboard pattern. The satin weave is arranged so that on the front side of the material there are more longitudinal, thinner threads, making the fabric look very smooth on the outside and matte on the inside. Poplin or satin - which is better if you want a thing to have a noble shine? Of course, satin, because in addition to the nature of weaving, which provides gloss, it is created from twisted threads, which adds fabric of radiant overflows.
Nature of the fibers
Satin, calico, poplin - what raw materials are these fabrics made of? Satin and poplin today are made both from natural (cotton, wool, silk) material, and from chemical fibers. In poplin, a mixture of natural and synthetic threads is often used. Coarse calico, which is also made by the method of plain weaving, is produced only from cotton. All fabrics are dyed.
Poplin or satin
What's better? It depends on the individual preferences of the consumer. Some people like a smooth and cool canvas, others prefer a deliberately uneven structure that gives the fabric a feeling of home comfort. The peculiarity of poplin is that when weaving, a thick transverse duck lies across the thin warp threads so that it forms a kind of scar on the back and front sides of the fabric. Historians tell us that this fabric appeared in the French residence of the Pope, and in translation into Russian means “papal”.
Dense brilliant satin native to China. The word comes from the Arabic name of the Chinese harbor - Zaytun, from where the ships sailed forwarding the rolls of magnificent matter to Europe. Medieval craftsmen sewed luxury clothes for noble persons from satin. Thanks to its fantastic durability, they decorated shoes and palace furniture.
Modern use
The classic application of these fabrics is sewing clothes and underwear. Calico, poplin or satin - which is better to choose, for example, for bedding? Coarse calico is very popular among housewives, it is inexpensive and practical. Sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers made of natural poplin are very good to the touch, almost do not wrinkle, perfectly absorb moisture and retain heat. They are nice to wrap themselves up and fall asleep sweetly on a cold winter night. Conversely, bedding made of satin in hot and stuffy weather looks alluring. Their smooth shiny surface conquers heat. The material is durable, retains color for a long time and is quite easy to care for.
Dresses, shirts, tablecloths are also willingly sewed from the presented fabrics. Printed calico clothes, however, are now not so common, but poplin or satin are widely used. What is best worn and looks: a satin shirt or a poplin t-shirt, a poplin skirt or a satin jacket?
The touch of both materials on the skin is unusually pleasant, things from them are wear-resistant and do not require special care. And if the advantage of poplin can be considered its ideal characteristics in clothing for sports and recreation, then the satin's strength is its festive satin glow. It is unlikely that these materials compete with each other, outfits from both fabrics have an equal right to take a place in your wardrobe.
