What is celebrated in Russia on January 25: Student's Day or Tatyana's Day?

With the advent of the New Year holidays, all young people are looking forward to their holiday, where you can relax from the gray everyday life. It is about Student 's Day, which is also called Tatyana's Day. It is January 25th that two holidays are celebrated: Tatyana’s Day, Student’s Day . Many people are interested in the question: are there any differences between them or is it the same holiday, which has just two names? We’ll try to figure this out!

The history of the origin of Tatyana's day

Tatyana’s day was celebrated on January 25 in Orthodox Russia since ancient times, this was preceded by the reckoning of the Holy Martyr Tatiana. The history of the holiday is deeply rooted in the history of the Roman Empire. Once in the family of the Roman consul, who secretly professed Christianity from all, a girl was born, whom they decided to call Tatyana. She was raised as a servant of God and the Church. When Tatyana reached the age of eighteen, she decided not to get married, but to devote her life to the church, becoming a servant of the church, in which she helped disadvantaged and sick people.

After some time, the persecution of Christians broke out with new force in the Roman Empire, and Tatyana was captured, where she was to be sacrificed to an idol. The girl began to pray. Soon her prayers were answered and Tatyana miraculously escaped from the sacrifice. But the torment of the girl did not end. Subsequently, the girl was tortured with whips, tried to burn, stabbed with knives, but she courageously endured all the torments and, thanks to her faith and prayers, she went out to the martyrs who were absolutely healthy and unharmed. Everyone who hurt Tatiana died from the punishing hand of Christ. It was because of this that Tatyana was recognized dead by faith by the Christian people, and this day became a special church holiday.

Student Day in Russia - how it all began

By the will of fate, in January 1755, the great Empress of Russia Elizaveta Petrovna created and signed a decree in January 2555, which referred to the founding of Moscow University. Since that time, this date was considered the day of all students, and Saint Tatiana became their patroness. And on January 25, Student's Day has been celebrated for more than 250 years.

The very story of Elizabeth Petrovna’s signing of the decree on the creation of the university began with the initiative of Ivan Ivanovich Shuvalov, who at that time was a philanthropist, patron of collectors and scientists, and most importantly, the empress’s favorite. It is known that Shuvalov was a close friend of Lomonosov, who influenced the choice of the city for the creation of the university. Among the arguments for founding an educational institution in Moscow it was that in this city there are many noblemen who wish to receive knowledge. And also the fact that the visitors have relatives in Moscow who will provide them with housing, especially since at that time living there was much cheaper than in other cities.

As a result, the empress signed a decree and thereby opened a new class in the history of Russia - the class of students. At first, on January 25, Student's Day was celebrated only in Moscow, and it was considered a capital's celebration. It was a day of mysterious unity, when science united many different people. By tradition, January 25th, Student's Day was celebrated cheerfully, students drank a lot of alcohol, but only on that day the police did not arrest them, but politely escorted them home. Despite the fact that the history of the holiday is a thing of the past, traditions have been preserved to this day. All students gather in friendly companies and cheerfully celebrate it.

Officially, on January 25, Student's Day was appointed by the President of Russia Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin in 2006, after which he became nationwide. The full name of this holiday is: Tatyana’s Day - Day of Russian Students.
