Fabric spray paint: how to bring old things back to life

Over time, after prolonged wear and washing, clothing becomes dull, unattractive. Perhaps spots have appeared on the fabric that do not wash, and the thing is still good. In this case, we can bring it back to life using indelible fabric dye, completely repainting the item or by applying any pattern to separate areas. You just need to choose a quality tool and connect your imagination.

What kind of fabric can be dyed

Synthetic clothing does not lend itself well to dyeing, so it is better to give it to dry cleaning, where professionals will do it. Although, if not sorry, you can experiment at home. Polyester repels paint, the color is pale and rinses off very quickly.

For nylon material it is better to use chemical paint in the form of a powder. The color will be bright and uniform. At home, using fabric spray paint, cotton, linen, silk, and wool are best dyed. The texture is malleable, well absorbs coloring pigments. But for the PVC fabric, which is often used for outdoor advertising, special acrylic dyes and fixing varnish are used.

Paints

In construction and hardware stores, you can easily find the right paint for the material. They are produced in several versions:





  • powder;
  • paste;
  • aerosol;
  • crystals.

Water-based paints and contours are also sold to professional artists. They can be used for wet and dry coloring without boiling. The drawing, applied with a brush or spray, is fixed with a hot iron from the wrong side.

Acrylic color for fabrics is considered one of the best materials. Drawings are strong, bright and do not wash off. Therefore, they can be used to decorate everyday wardrobe items such as jeans, t-shirts, bags and even shoes.

The structure of the material allows pigments to be deeply absorbed into the fibers and firmly fixed inside. Leave-in fabric dye will stick better to clothing made from natural material.

Clothes preparation

Before painting, the fabric must be prepared:

  • The clothes that we want to update, be sure to wash, using only detergent, and rinse well.
  • Dry and iron the fabric as needed.
  • Pull the fabric on a board or piece of cardboard. This will prevent the dye from getting on the other side of the garment.
  • Straighten the area to be painted so that wrinkles do not form. You can stab it with a pin or sewing needle.

Apply pigment to the material according to the instructions on the label. It can be a brush, a bottle’s contour cap or fabric spray paint.

Painting

If you draw poorly, you can use a few tricks. First we draw the image contour on the material with a simple pencil in white or black. The main thing is that these marks are not noticeable after staining. You can also use blanks templates, applying them to clothes. Fill the interior of the pattern with paint, or with Marabu Textil Design aerosol we pigment areas outside the future pattern.

In order to slightly smear the transitions when using several colors, it is recommended to moisten the canvas first with water using a spray gun. If the shades are very blurry, we dry the surface of the clothes with a hairdryer. It is possible to apply jewelry in the form of beads and rhinestones on the still-dried paint. We spread them in the desired sequence and leave to dry, or glue the sparkles on a special glue.

Aerosol application

Acrylic paints in spray cans are especially popular. The pattern lays evenly, dries quickly and does not wash off if the fabric is washed at a temperature of 30 degrees. Before starting the staining process, shake the colors well for several minutes. Spray paint for fabric simplifies the drawing process, especially for those who are not good at it, as it can be applied at any angle: horizontally or vertically.

Putting a stencil on a T-shirt, it is advisable to stretch it a bit, when worn, the pattern will look natural and not crack. To get the color saturated, apply it in three layers with fifteen-minute intervals. When using black spray paint, a single coat is enough for the fabric. The resulting image is left to dry for several hours.
