Windows is restored after an unexpected shutdown: what does this mean and how to get rid of such failures in the future?

One of the most unpleasant phenomena for all users who work with Windows-systems is the appearance of a message stating that Windows has been restored after an unexpected shutdown. Moreover, in most cases, the restoration is also preceded by the so-called screen of death (BSoD). What is the reason and what can be done to bring the system to life or not to “kill” the computer, we’ll try to figure it out. If this happened, do not rush to restart the system several times at once (it will work), otherwise the computer will completely fail.

Windows restored after an unexpected shutdown (Bluescreen): reasons

Alas, to say immediately and unambiguously what caused this phenomenon is completely impossible.

Blue screen of death

However, it is considered that the most common situations that could theoretically provoke a notification that Windows was restored after an unexpected shutdown, with forced recovery, are usually called either hardware problems (motherboard, RAM or graphics adapter) or software failures (damage to system files and drivers, boot components, virus exposure, etc.). It goes without saying that a message can only appear once when a sudden power outage occurs or the computer overheats. However, in the case when the system recovery (Windows 10, for example) is launched without the user's knowledge constantly, there are reasons to think. There are not so many options.

A message that Windows is restored after an unexpected shutdown appears periodically: what to do?

First of all, if the rollback is made with enviable constancy, you should immediately clarify the root cause of this phenomenon. In the event of a BSoD, it is necessary to record the error stop code and indications of a failed object.

Decoding errors in BlueScreenView

If only an error code is present, identify the faulty device or driver using the BlueScreenView utility, which will clearly indicate what exactly affected this behavior of the computer system. Only after that it will be necessary to take action. And do not flatter yourself about the fact that the system has been restored. There is absolutely no guarantee that the failure will not happen again.

Checking the performance of "iron"

To troubleshoot, if possible, disassemble the system unit or laptop, and then at least clean the device from dust. Very often, this situation can be triggered by conflicts of RAM strips, so it is strongly recommended to remove them from the slots on the motherboard one at a time and check the system’s performance.

Utility for checking RAM Memtest86 +

In order not to do such things manually, it is best to test using the Memtest86 / 86 + application.

Spontaneous forced rollback of the system may also indicate that the failures concern the hard disk. It is best checked by the Victoria program. For those who don’t have such a utility at hand or simply don’t know how to use it, it is advisable to check the disk from the command line (chkdsk / x / f / r).

If you overclocked the video card, in most cases there is no doubt that the cause of the failures lies precisely in this.

Complete BIOS reset

Reset all parameters in the primary BIOS / UEFI system, and also set the graphics adapter to factory mode.

Finally, check the cooling system using the temperature indicators provided by, for example, the AIDA64 program. To optimize the parameters, use the SpeedFan utility, check the cooling fans (coolers) themselves, or even replace the power supply in case a shortage or excess of current and voltage is detected.

What to do with software and system crashes?

Sometimes, after the recovery message appears, it makes sense to start the rollback manually, but the recovery point of Windows 10 or any other system should be chosen so that it precedes the time the failure occurred for the first time. Moreover, to perform such an operation, it is advisable to boot the system in safe mode.

After the rollback is performed (if it is possible), it is recommended to check the system startup section in the configuration (for Windows 7 and below - msconfig, for the eighth and tenth modifications - “Task Manager”) and disable all unnecessary or doubtful applets, leaving only the antivirus and ctfmon process responsible for changing layouts and languages (only for Windows 7 and below).

Checking the integrity of system files

In addition, it is advisable to check the system files using the command line (sfc / scannow) for this. If the system does not boot, you can start from a removable bootable media and call up the command console from it (Shift + F10).

If the driver files are indicated in the error decoding on the blue screen, updating them will be the best solution (sometimes, however, a rollback may be required), which can be done in the Device Manager or using automated utilities like Driver Booster.

Finally, using the Kaspersky Rescue Disk disk boot utility, it is recommended to check your computer for viruses before starting Windows.

Brief Summary

These are, in general terms, the causes of failures, due to which a notification is issued that Windows has been restored after an unexpected shutdown. Most experts are inclined to believe that the software environment crashes due to malfunctions in the hardware, therefore, when trying to eliminate the consequences of such a phenomenon, primary attention should be paid to the motherboard, hard drive, RAM and video chip. They are most often the culprits of this behavior of the system. It goes without saying that we should not forget about the power supply, which should exactly correspond to the installed equipment, and about the cooling system. Well, software failures, if the hardware is operating normally, are eliminated quite simply.

Note: just in case, either install the latest updates for your system, or get rid of recently installed ones (most often for Windows 7). Owners of unlicensed (pirated) copies of Windows can be advised to purchase legal software or perform system reactivation using applications like KMSAuto Net. As for testing the system itself and the components of the computer, it is better to do it not in a working OS, but at startup from bootable media, including those created on the basis of the above-mentioned verification utilities.
