Free work with files and folders is an indisputable plus of the Windows and Android operating systems. Despite the fact that the former mainly specializes in desktop computers, and the latter on mobile devices, the principle of the file system is very similar. Users can freely move, copy, delete, rename files (if it is not about system components), as well as create folders, delete them and much more. In Windows, this is possible using standard tools, and on Android you will have to install a special explorer. This article describes how you can move files in folders on Android and Windows.
Moving files on a computer
What about computers running the Windows operating system? The following recommendations are relevant for all versions of the OS, starting with XP and above. For the described actions, you do not need third-party software, so you can immediately start copying data. So, you can move the file to a folder on Windows in the following ways.
The first method is simple drag and drop
To do this, you only need a mouse. Open the folder where the files are located (they can be on the hard drive, virtual device, remote computer, etc.) and select the necessary data. If you want to select all positions, then use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A. Then hold LMB on the selected files and drag them to another folder, then release the mouse button. In this case, the data will be copied, that is, they will appear in the new folder, but will still be in the old directory. They can be deleted. If you copied something incorrectly, you can always undo the last action with the Ctrl + Z keys.
The second method is moving with the keys
Now try using the Windows keyboard shortcuts. The advantage of this method is that you do not need to open two windows on the desktop at the same time to drag and drop documents. You can also move files to a folder later if they remain on the clipboard. First you need to select the desired position, and then press Ctrl + C. As a result, the files will be placed on the clipboard. Now go to the desired directory and press Ctrl + V so that copies of the data appear in a new folder. Remember, if you use the copy combination Ctrl + C on other files, then they will already appear in the final folder.
Third option - cut and paste
This method is similar to the previous one, since hot keys are also used here. However, the difference is that the files will be cut from the initial folder, and after pasting into another directory, they will be moved from it. You need to select files and press Ctrl + X.
After that, also open another directory and press Ctrl + V. Files will be deleted from the first folder and appear in the second.
Using the context menu
You can move files to another folder not only by dragging and dropping hot keys, but also using the menu. To get into it, you need to select documents and click on them with RMB. The menu items "Copy" and "Cut" are available - use one of them, depending on the need. Go to another directory and click RMB on an empty spot, and then select "Paste" in the menu.
These methods allow you to move files to a folder, to another hard drive, an external storage device, DVD / CD (if they are not write protected).
Many advanced users prefer to work with large amounts of data using special file managers. One of these is the classic and famous Total Commander. In it you can work with several conductors in parallel, assign commands for each action, sort files and much more.
The Windows operating system provides ample opportunity to organize folder and directory structures. You can use hot keys, only a computer mouse, special tools, etc.
How to move files in folders on Android?
The Android operating system does not provide developers with a built-in file manager, so you can use one of the following methods:
- Connect the device to the computer and work with files through Windows.
- Install a special file manager on the smartphone / tablet through the Play Market.
Both options are discussed in more detail below.
Connect to computer
To move the file to a folder on Android via a PC, you need a USB cable. After connecting to a computer, you must select the connection type "File Transfer" so that the system recognizes the internal drive or a connected flash card.
In this case, the computer will prompt you to perform the action. Select "Open folder" and go to the directory of the internal drive of the smartphone on the "Android". To move files and work with folders, here you can use methods that are suitable for ordinary copying data in Windows (described at the beginning of the article).
Install file manager
One of the popular managers is ES Explorer.
You can download it for free in the Play Market app store. Using the utility, you get not only access to all files on the built-in drive and flash drive, but also have great functionality for sorting, displaying, copying and so on. For example, using "ES Explorer" you can move a file from downloads to a folder, which cannot be done using standard means of the Android operating system. To move, you need to go to the directory with downloads and select the desired file with a long press. After that, select the "Move to ..." command and specify the final directory.
Another useful program is Cabinet Beta.
It is the same file manager, but with limited functionality. However, all the useful functions are available here - copy, cut, paste, rename, move, archive and the like. This utility will be enough to move the file to a folder.
