Quite often it is necessary to not only access your home PC (laptop) from the work terminal or vice versa, but also remotely turn on the computer. Many users, unfortunately, do not at all assume that it is quite easy to perform such actions if you know exactly how to configure this connection using standard tools of Windows operating systems and third-party software. Consider the main aspects and prerequisites associated with the possibility of organizing such access.
Is it possible to turn on the computer remotely, and why might it be necessary?
Yes, indeed, you can enable a remote terminal located on a local or virtual network. True, here you should immediately pay attention to the moment that in the case of stationary PCs with the power turned off (without an uninterruptible power supply installed) nothing will work, since no electricity will be supplied to the network card, which will be responsible for turning on the PC. With laptops in this regard, the situation is somewhat simpler, since in most cases, users do not remove the battery.
But why is it necessary to turn on the computer remotely? This is mainly due to situations when the user really uses the connection to the remote "Desktop" to access all the programs and functions of the computer or laptop, to which there is no physical access. In other situations, switching on the remote terminal is completely impractical, and sometimes even completely unsafe.
The easiest remote access setup
To begin with, we will briefly dwell on how to enable remote access to a computer in Windows in the sense of using the programs and equipment installed on it that are used to process information.
To do this, go to the section of additional parameters in the system properties, and then activate the network identification permission on the access tab and enable permission to control the terminal in additional options. After that, the basic information will need to remember the full name of the computer and the username, if there are several registered.
After that, on the device from which the connection will be made, you need to call the appropriate applet for connecting to the remote "Desktop", enter the above data and activate the connection.
Note: pay attention to the fact that on the remote PCM or laptop, in the absence of a user password for logging into the system, it will need to be created in the account management section. If the user has a Microsoft registration, then with equal success you can use it, which looks much simpler.
How to turn on a computer remotely via the Internet or local area network: mandatory requirements
But the above steps related to gaining access to a remote PC only in those cases when the terminal is in operating mode (on, and the operating system is loaded). But how to enable remote access to a computer, and in such a way that you can turn on even a turned off PC or wake it from sleep mode.
To do this, you must comply with several prerequisites. The following components must be installed on the computer:
- motherboard with support for ATX power (AVX);
- network card with support for WOL (remote wakeup);
- Primary BIOS or UEFI system to enable the necessary settings.
BIOS / UEFI Settings
So, first of all, you need to activate the awakening mode in the primary system. When you turn on your PC or laptop, enter the BIOS / UEFI settings using the Del key, other buttons or their combinations (usually the input method is indicated on the start screen).
After that, find in the settings the power management section (something like Power Management), in which the Wake-on-LAN item or something similar should be present). Names may vary in different systems, but in any case they will be associated either with wake (Wake) or with power (Power) through network access (LAN).
Set this parameter to Enabled. Sometimes UEFI systems may have wake-up points for both local area network (LAN) and wireless network (WLAN). They can be included both.
After that, save the settings and exit them.
Network adapter configuration
After a restart, you will need to configure your network adapter, which is the mission of turning on the remote PC. Go to the section of active network connections by typing the command ncpa.cpl in the "Run" console, and then go to the properties. Next, select your card and click the settings button. Now the most important thing!
On the power management tab, set the parameters shown in the image above to active. After that, go to the “Advanced” tab and for the items shown in the picture below, set the on state.
Then, in the properties of the network connection, click the details button and write down the physical address of the computer that you want to include (MAC address). As indicated, write down the full name of the terminal. In theory, this is enough to transfer the "magic" package and turn on the computer remotely over the network or over the Internet.
Note: if the terminal is assigned a static IP, it may also be required, but for dynamic IPs, it is enough to know only the MAC address. To make sure that the selected adapter is active, just turn off the computer. The light on the network card should blink.
Advanced DNS and Router Settings
In order to turn on the computer remotely over a local area network with distributed dynamic addresses, you no longer need anything. Just use the remote access client. But sometimes, in order to turn on the computer remotely, it may be necessary to obtain dynamic DNS, for which you can use the registration on the noip.com resource, after which you will need to add the received address to the router settings in the DDNS activation section, and add the reserved address in the DHCP server settings a list of white IP addresses.
Also, on the daughter computer, you may need to create a new rule for incoming connections via UDP ports 7 and 9. If it is not possible to wake up on the daughter terminal in the power supply configuration, just in case, deactivate the quick start item (section "Configuring Settings That Are Not Available Now").
Software
To simplify your task, you can turn on the computer remotely using special utilities. Many recommend using the TeamViewer client, but for an average user it may seem too complicated to configure.
It is much easier to use the small program Wake On LAN, in which you need to enter the MAC of the remote terminal and indicate the full name of the connected computer, and then simply press the wake-up button. But TeamWiewer can be used both as a means of turning on a remote PC, and as a client connecting to a remote "Desktop".
