DNS from Google: how to register 8.8.8.8 on a computer and a router?

Recently, many users are increasingly turning to Internet services, which are DNS servers, to use their parameters, which are usually provided completely free of charge, to configure their own connection to the World Wide Web. One of the most popular and most well-functioning ones is the service from Google, which uses the address 8.8.8.8 for the main DNS server.

How to register such a combination in the options for your own connection on a computer or on a router (router, ADSL modem) and why all this is needed, then we’ll try to figure it out. But for a complete understanding of the picture, first let's briefly dwell on what constitutes such a service.

What is an 8.8.8.8 DNS server?

The DNS servers themselves are kind of converters of IP addresses into domain names familiar to the user, which are designated in the form of letters, numbers and special characters.

The simplest DNS server

Roughly speaking, to access a page you do not need to remember its full digital address, but just enter the usual name of the resource. Relatively recently, Google launched its own Internet service, called the public (open or public) DNS server “Google”, which anyone can use if the parameters provided by the provider (Internet access service provider) or mobile operator not satisfied.

Why might you need to use DNS from Google?

But what might the user not like? Firstly, the provider's own servers do not always have a high enough speed for processing user requests, and secondly, now there is a negative trend in the world related to the blocking of certain Internet resources in certain countries (take at least China, North Korea or even Ukraine ) Of course, this service does not allow to bypass all possible locks to the full extent, since it does not have the capabilities of a proxy server or VPN. But sometimes, through the use of Google’s DNS, it is possible to achieve a significant increase in connection speed when entering a specific resource, when downloading files from the Internet, etc.

How to register 8.8.8.8 in IPv4 / IPv6 protocol settings?

As for the main situations in which it may be necessary to change the DNS options, most specialists usually single out two cases, one of which concerns changing the parameters on their own computer or mobile device, and the second is associated with installing similar options on the router when using a wireless connection.

The first thing we will focus on is how to register 8.8.8.8 on a Windows computer on board. To get to the necessary settings, you do not need to use the "Control Panel" or the section of parameters and transitions through various menus. The easiest way is to enter the ncpa.cpl command in the Run console, after which, through the RMB menu, you will need to go to the connection properties, for which you are supposed to change the options.

Configure DNS for IPv4

In the connection properties window, you need to call up the IPv4 protocol properties, and then activate the item for manually setting DNS addresses. The options you need to install are as follows:

  • for preferred DNS - 8.8.8.8;
  • for the alternative - eight, eight, four, four.

In principle, many experts believe that such a sequence is not necessary at all. The fact is that combinations can easily be swapped, and the final result will not be affected in any way (although it is believed that the first is to use an address of four eights).

If we talk about how to register DNS servers 8.8.8.8 from Google for the protocol of the sixth version, the combinations will be slightly different, which is associated exclusively with the specifics of the protocol itself. In this case, additional parameters are entered in front of the main addresses described above, as shown in the image below.

Configure DNS for IPv6

Note: the addresses are entered exactly in the form in which they were presented above. If you make a mistake when entering the delimiters, the connection will not work!

How to change the DNS on the router?

Finally, a few words about how to register 8.8.8.8 on the router. As an example, consider the actions with TP-Link series routers (on other devices, the operations performed will not differ much, and the difference can only be in the names of partitions).

Login to the TP-Link router web interface

Via the browser, enter the device’s web interface using the address shown above and admin as the login and password, then go to the WAN item in the network section, activate the item for using the specified DNS servers, and then enter the protocol specified for the protocol IPv4 combinations.

Configure DNS on TP-Link Router

If you use the sixth version as the main protocol (which, however, looks very doubtful), prescribe the appropriate combinations.

Note: sometimes it is advisable to leave the address provided directly by the provider as the primary server, and use Google’s DNS as the secondary server.
