Foundation and history
The territory of modern Altai, rich in rocks - copper and silver - attracted businessman Akinfiy Demidov. After relocating a couple of hundred of his workers to this land in 1730, he set about building a large copper-and-silver smelter. For workers around the building quickly built a settlement. The small village of Ust-Barnaul was soon filled not only by the mortgages of the plant, but also by immigrants from central Russia and the Urals. The settlement grew rapidly and developed. Thus, the miner Demidov became the founder of the city.
In 1730, the foundation of Barnaul was approved according to documents. And only in 1771 he received the status of a mountain city. Due to the development of industry in various industries in 1937, it became the administrative center and capital of the Altai Territory.
According to historical data, the first settlements on earth, where a modern city is now standing, appeared in the Stone Age. This is evidenced by archaeological sites located throughout Barnaul. According to Professor Dolzon, the name of the city comes from the name “Boronole”, where “Boro” from the Turkic language means “wolf”, and “street” means “river”, as a result, “wolf river”.

The old name of the Boronoul river from Teleut is “porongyul”, where “in terms of” is “muddy water” and “street” is “river”. The result is a muddy river.
