Self-hacking terminals in Fallout 4
Terminals have varying degrees of protection: from light to very complex. There are also objects that cannot be accessed without a previously known password. Usually, a password is given for some task, or is located nearby. At the beginning of the game, you cannot hack terminals above an easy difficulty level. To hack terminals of a higher level of complexity, the Hacker ability is required. Before proceeding with hacking, it is worth inspecting everything around, since the password to the terminal can be located anywhere. But often you can get information from the terminals only by hacking them.
In order to crack the terminals in Fallout 4, you need to go to it and press [E]. You will see a list of likely passwords and a random set of letters and symbols. In order to select a word as a password, move the mouse over it and press the left button. Each incorrect option reduces the number of attempts by one, and the Similarity option is also displayed. This value indicates how many letters in the selected option exactly match the correct password, that is, the letter and its position in the word must match.
In addition, the number of options is affected by intelligence and, to a lesser extent, luck. With the maximum success of "Luck" and "Intelligence", the number of options on the terminal of high complexity will be only six words. In addition to words, there are also characters in arbitrary sets, limited by brackets (), {}, [], <>. If you select the opening bracket of such a set, one of the incorrect options will be excluded, or the number of attempts will be reset. If all four attempts fail, the terminal will be locked for ten seconds.

Hacking terminals using satellites
In the event that you do not want to spend experience points on the Hacker ability, or you have less than four points in the Intellect parameter, then the companions will come to your aid: Codsworth and Valentine. In general, any satellite can hack terminals in Fallout 4. But only these two are capable of hacking a terminal of absolutely any complexity.
