Mother's Day holiday

The Mother's Day holiday has become known in Russia relatively recently. We began to celebrate it for the first time in 1998. There is no exact date for the celebration, since all countries celebrate it on different days. It is on this day that the future and held mothers, continuers, nurse and guardian of the family hearth are at the center of events.

Mom is the first word spoken by a child. Mom is the dearest, closest and dearest person in the life of each of us. The Mother's Day holiday gives us the opportunity to once again thank our loved ones for giving birth, raising and educating us.

The history of the holiday Mother's Day originates in Ancient Greece. The Greeks worshiped the mother of all gods - Gaia, paid tribute to her. The Romans, in turn, honored and idolized eastern Cybele. For centuries, the Celts considered their goddess Bridget.

The holiday became widely known in the 17th century. It was at this time in England that the day off was first introduced on the final Sunday of November for all the servants and workers, so that they could relax and see their families. Mothers and nannies were released from all household duties that day. It was also customary for the British to arrange a large feast, at which all members of the family, young and old, gathered. The holiday was called "Mom's Sunday." The main dish on the festive table was the “mother cake”, which the children baked for their parents. Also, mothers and grandmothers were presented with eggs, flowers and gifts. This triumph is primordially Christian, more religious than folk, but despite everything, the day of mothers, grandmothers and nurses has taken root among other religions.

The tradition soon took root and became popular not only in England, but also on other continents. In the United States, for example, Mothers Day was celebrated for the first time in 1872. With the light hand of a young resident of Philadelphia, Anna Jervis, the holiday became a worldwide celebration. This happened because a persistent girl began activities in support of all the mothers of America, regularly contacted the US legislature and made sure that in 1910 in Virginia, Mother's Day became official. Anna herself believed that she did not have time to show her mother how much she loves her during her lifetime, and therefore she wanted to do this even after death. The idea of Anna was supported by other women, who helped her get permission to establish this holiday in Congress.

A little later, thanks to President Woodrow Wilson, Mother's Day became the general holiday of America and was celebrated annually. The idea was supported by the countries of Europe, Africa and Asia. In most countries of the world, this day is celebrated at different times. The second Sunday of May is declared festive in America, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, and also in Ukraine, Japan, Turkey, Germany, Italy and other countries. Unfortunately, in Russia, even after several decades, not all people know about how and when Mother 's Day is celebrated. According to tradition, for Russians closer Women's Day is March 8, while Mom’s day goes by the wayside.

According to the decree issued on January 30, 1998 by the President of the Russian Federation B.N. Yeltsin, Mother's Day is celebrated annually. It unites the whole of Russian society, reflects the ideas of kindness and gratitude to mothers.

We sincerely hope that soon Mother's Day will become a good tradition and will be celebrated in every Russian family every year, raise the status of a mother-woman and will be revered by society on an equal basis with International Women's Day and other holidays.

Today, Mother's Day is mentioned to young generations in kindergartens and schools, expanding the horizons of children, instilling in them love, respect and attention to their parents and loved ones.
