The Northern Flotilla was founded in 1933 on June 1st. It was the youngest fleet of the country, it was based in Murmansk - in the Kola Bay. By order of the Commander- in -Chief of the Russian Navy in 1996, the Day of the Northern Fleet of Russia was established, we celebrate it on the first of the first summer month.
From the history
Peter I was still trying to create a fleet in the North. In those years, the Solombala shipyard in Arkhangelsk was built, thanks to which new warships appeared in Russia. In 1740, Russian ships began to sail north from the Norwegian Sea to the Kara Sea, controlling the behavior of the Swedish fleet and protecting their border.
The birthday of the Northern Fleet, some historians associate with the First World War. In those harsh years, the Northern Flotilla was created, which existed until 1920. Further, on its basis, the government formed the White Sea Flotilla, which was transformed in the same year into the Northern Sea Forces.
It was not possible to save the fleet due to the reduction of the naval forces. Two years later, that is, in 1922, the naval forces disbanded: some of the ships began to guard the border, some were transferred to fishing trawlers.
Day of the Northern Fleet of Russia: rebirth
In 1933, by order of the people's commissar of defense , destroyers, patrol ships, and submarines moved north from the Baltic Fleet to the north. Of these, the Northern Flotilla was formed with a base in the city of Murmansk. At the same time, began to build the first naval base in the Arctic. In 1937, the flotilla became the Northern Fleet under the command of Konstantin Dushenov, the flagship of the 1st rank.
The day of the Northern Fleet of Russia was not celebrated at that time: it was not before the holidays. In 1941, the war began, which became a severe test for the young fleet. Warships constantly plowed the sea, increasing power.
It was the only fleet whose numerical strength grew during the war years. He covered the flank of the army from shelling of enemy ships and troops, defended naval communications, disrupted the transportation of enemy cargo, and took the initiative.
Modern time
The Day of the Northern Fleet of Russia now is a memory of the selfless fulfillment of duty, of the courage and heroism of the North Sea, not only during the war years, but also in peacetime. After the war, the power of the fleet became even greater. It launched a ballistic missile, and also raised the flag on the 1st Russian nuclear submarine. The basis of the modern fleet in the North is torpedo and nuclear missile, anti-submarine and aircraft-carrying submarines, anti-submarine and missile-carrying aircraft.
Day of the Northern Fleet of Russia 2013 was held, as usual, on June 1. The holiday was celebrated on a grand scale in the northern regions, especially at the bases of Severomorsk, Gadzhievo, Zapadnaya Litsa, Polyarny. The essence of the triumph is that people support the personnel of ships and submarines, because the fleet has global tasks: it includes nuclear deterrence, protection of economic zones, ensuring the safety of navigation, suppressing illegal activities, and fulfilling political tasks.
