Until recently, one of the best insulation for outerwear was considered to be natural goose down. It is light, soft and voluminous, perfectly warms even at critically low temperatures. But, despite all the advantages, this insulation has a number of disadvantages. Firstly, washing products with such a filler inside turns into torment, since the fluff climbs out through the seams and fabric. Secondly, such material is categorically not suitable for people suffering from allergies. Given these shortcomings, in the 70s of the last century, a group of international companies 3M THINSULATE and DuPont developed a new high-tech bio-fluff insulation. Reviews about him, his properties and features of care are presented in our article. We will definitely dwell on what temperature regime the down jackets based on it are designed for.
Insulation bio-fluff - what is it?
The basis for the creation of this material is DuPont's patented Sorona Biopolymer, which is characterized by properties such as heat storage, lightness, breathability and ease of care. Thanks to this, all products made using such a filler provide maximum comfort and warmth during operation.
For many people, it’s not entirely clear how the bio-down insulation is made. What kind of material is this? Biopuh is based on plant materials. Due to this, it is environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic. Biofibre fibers have a three-dimensional spherical shape, and the filler itself is distinguished by its silky structure and crease resistance. The insulation fully complies with sanitary and environmental standards. It is hypoallergenic, lightweight and flexible, which means it takes care of your health and comfort.
Material Features
The material has the following characteristics:
- Softness and fluffy. The biopuh insulation, according to reviews, is a fairly voluminous material. The three-dimensional spherical shape of the filler provides natural fluffiness, good resistance to compression and a silky structure.
- Excellent thermal insulation properties. The presented insulation perfectly retains heat and is ideal for outerwear.
- Easy to care. The insulation does not migrate through the fabric and easily tolerates any washing. In this case, the material is not deformed or destroyed. To improve thermal insulation characteristics can be mixed with natural fluff in any volume.
During the operation of products based on bio-fluff, you will forget about what allergies are. This material is a biopolymer, a synthetic and hypoallergenic material, which for many people is one of its main advantages.
Temperature mode
The main question asked by buyers of winter outerwear is related to what temperature the biofoat insulation is designed for. Can it be worn at -40 ° C or only at -10 ° C?
Manufacturers note that in this matter everything is individual, as in the choice of clothes. How comfortable it will be in a particular down jacket depends on the heat transfer of the person, the material of the top of the jacket and lining, as well as the volume of the filler itself. A dense fabric with water-repellent impregnation retains heat much better than any other, even with a small thickness of insulation.
In general, manufacturers with outerwear with insulation bio-fluff are conditionally divided into three groups:
- Products with lightweight bio-down packing (thin in thickness) are designed for temperatures up to -10 ° .
- Outerwear with a medium-thick packing inside is marked on the MEDIUM PADDING label (two snowflakes are shown). Such products are designed for temperature conditions not lower than -15 ° .
- Volumetric products with full bio-fluff padding make it easy to withstand low temperatures up to -35 ° C.
Reviews about the insulation biopuh
Since this material is relatively new, not all potential buyers are familiar with its properties. There are also quite a few reviews about it, but all of them are exclusively positive. Buyers in outerwear liked the following:
- it is soft and light, it is convenient to engage in active sports in such products;
- in such clothes it is not cold even at -20 ° C;
- when choosing products based on fluff or bio-fluff, the latest high-tech material has advantages;
- products can be washed in a gentle mode in the washing machine, and their properties will not be affected;
- during washing and during operation of outerwear, the filler does not climb through the seams and fabric, like fluff;
- the material is hypoallergenic, which is considered a real salvation for children and adults with allergies;
- Bio-down insulation is marked with a sign of environmental safety.
Material flaws
Based on the positive reviews presented above, it is difficult to identify any deficiencies in the bio-fluff. This material retains heat perfectly and at least at a temperature of 20 ° below zero it is definitely not cold in it. More precisely, frost is not felt at all. The products are washed well, which means you don’t have to worry about too much coloring.
Negative reviews about the insulation of biopuh only indicate that such a filler makes products more voluminous than natural fluff, and this is not always liked by women who, on the contrary, want to visually lose a couple of kilograms. It is not out of place when buying a down jacket will pay attention to the price. It will be higher or at the level of products with natural down.
Washing clothes with insulation bio-fluff
As one of the advantages of the filler, the manufacturer indicates the ease of care. Indeed, a women's down jacket made of bio-fluff can be washed both in an automatic washing machine and manually. The optimum temperature for washing is 30 ° C. In this case, neither the upper fabric nor the filler will definitely deform and lose their properties. Spin in the washing machine at 600 rpm is also allowed.
As for the drying of down jackets, then this must be done in vivo. Jackets must not be dried in the open sun or near batteries. Ironing products is not recommended, since biopuh, like any other synthetic biopolymer, melts at high temperatures. It is important that before starting to wash, be sure to study all the information indicated on the product label.
