Hammock history

The inventors of the hammock are Indian tribes. They designed hanging beds for rescue from snakes and ants, but as it turned out later, this design is also incredibly comfortable for sleeping. The sailors who discovered America, appreciated the positive aspects of the hammock, so they immediately began to use a hanging bed on ships, as it almost did not rock out. With sailors, a hammock spread around the world.

Today it is popular all over the planet, and some countries have developed their own tradition of its manufacture. For example, in Brazil they are made from cotton and the bark of a local walnut tree, and all are decorated with fringe. Colombians use creepers and an agave tree to create such lodges. According to legend, Colombian hammocks are the most durable hanging beds in the world.

By the way, in the Soviet Union mesh hammocks were also hung in summer cottages.

What are

Today, the initial design of the hammock has undergone changes, so the market is replete with a wide variety of species. On this basis, the named products can be divided into 5 types:

  • hammocks swing
  • wireframe;
  • chair-shaped products;
  • outboard;
  • products for children.

All types of hammocks should be considered separately. Each type has its drawbacks and advantages, but one thing remains unchanged - a comfortable rest and relaxation effect.

Hammock swing

This type of hammock is a summer residence option, in apartments a similar version of a hanging bed is used very rarely. The main feature of this installation is only one reference point, all the fortifications converge in one specific place and are fixed to a tree or beam. The size of the hammock can be absolutely any. The compact hammock is suitable for children, and if you attach a canopy, you get a cozy place for the smallest.

There are large swing hammocks in diameter in order to relax in the great outdoors with a big company. To do this, you just need to choose a reliable support. The convenience of a hammock-swing is undeniable, but the price of this pleasure is not small.

frame hammock

Frame product

This is a completely universal hammock, it can be placed both in the country house and indoors. Unlike the previous view, this hammock does not require supports, as it is located on an already finished frame. Its supporting structure may be metal or wood. The universality of the hammock also lies in the design features: collapsible or stationary.

The weight of the stationary model is far from small, but due to this, good stability is achieved, therefore, it is necessary to approach the choice of the place where the installation will be located. For cottages, stationary frame hammocks can be equipped with a hinged installation and a mosquito net. No less popular products with a frame for apartments, as an extra bed or place of rest. They are often placed on balconies, in living rooms or loggias, because a hammock is, above all, a symbol of relaxation.

The collapsible design on the one hand has an advantage due to mobility, but on the other it loses because of less reliability. Most often they have a metal frame. Such a hammock is not tied to one place, it is easy to carry.

Hammock chair

The hammock chair differs from traditional models only in the shape of the bed. Typically, this type usually has a frame base, but there are also hanging hammocks that are easy to attach, for example, to a tree or ceiling in a house or apartment. Such a chair is an ideal place to read or work at a computer. A similar design is often equipped with a canopy. A hammock chair is the most popular type of hammock for placement in an apartment. Unlike its counterparts, it is not so bulky; it ideally fits almost any interior.

Hanging product

The classic is a hanging hammock. Just on such lodges, Indians and sailors slept. The design is very simple: fabric is fixed between the two supports. If at the dacha trees or concrete poles can serve as such supporting installations, then the apartment is a bit more complicated: a hammock is attached to the ceiling or walls.

The hanging product may be equipped with trims. It costs a little more than the “planless” brother, but the canvas will be more taut, which will reduce the likelihood of falling out of bed during sleep. Models that are not equipped with straps are much easier to assemble and transport, such a hammock is somewhat similar to a cradle and can accommodate only one person. You can assemble the product yourself, it is not at all difficult.

There are a couple of recommendations on how to make a hammock and relax in it comfortably:

  1. For a safe and comfortable stay, you need a strong and strong support (two parallel trees are ideal). You can do it yourself: dig in the soil columns with a cross section of 80 millimeters or more, 80 centimeters in depth, then pour concrete mixture. The distance between the supports is calculated very simply: we add 30 centimeters to the length of the fabric itself (deflection).
  2. The standard height for hanging the web is 1-1.5 meters.

Do not forget that the height of the suspended hammock affects the deflection according to the rule: the higher, the greater.

Baby hammock

A hammock for children has practically no differences from its "adult" versions, but manufacturers classify them in a separate category. Children's models have a small size, colorful colors, they are safe. Almost always, manufacturers equip hammocks for children with additional sides. The canvas has an ergonomic shape so that while there, the child feels only comfort and does not earn health problems during rest. The maximum weight that they can support as standard is 40 kilograms.

How to choose

Buying a hammock is a difficult choice from hundreds of different species. At the same time, 3 criteria remain unchanged:

  • capacity (capacity);
  • ultimate load;
  • canvas size.

By capacity, hammocks are divided into doubles, adults and children. The first option is designed to accommodate two people. But do not forget about their carrying capacity, as overload can affect the cliff. The larger the hammock in size, the stronger the supports should be. You can not hang the product on thin, young trees - the risk of breaking them is high.

The standard load on a hammock is 80-100 kilograms, since it is usually designed for one person, but it is better to play it safe. If you need a large carrying capacity, then parachute silk should be preferred - it can withstand 150-200 kilograms, and synthetics can withstand no more than 120 kilograms. The most fragile canvas is mesh, it cannot lift more than 80 kilograms of weight.

But no matter what the maximum load limit the hammock has, it must be remembered that its fibers wear out and weaken over time. Therefore, in order not to injure yourself, do not save on the load capacity of the product.

The last thing when choosing a hammock is length. They are both children and adults. The standard length is 2 meters, but if your height is just that, then there are options for 3-3.5 meters.

Photos on a hammock are obtained at home, cozy and atmospheric, and relaxation is complete. It is also a great place to sleep in the fresh air.
