What you need to know when choosing a nickname for horses?

Experts say that a nickname for a horse is chosen no less difficult than the name of a warship or a name that would ideally suit an unborn child. A horse’s nickname should be not only harmonious, but also meet both basic requirements and some unwritten rules, of which not every novice horse breeder can guess.

The basic requirements are such that, when choosing a nickname for horses, the names of specific people (especially public, famous people), as well as registered trademarks, should not be used, unless there is a corresponding written permission. Further on the blacklist are obscene expressions. In addition, novice breeders are supposed to know that for an Orlov trotter, a nickname cannot contain more than 16 letters, and thoroughbred horses can be called nicknames up to 27 characters in length.

However, for each breed there are more specific requirements, the so-called special rules. Some of them remain unchanged, while others are periodically subject to heated debate. For example, a thoroughbred horse or Arab breed means a nickname starting with the first letter in the name of the mother. Ideally, in the middle of the name is the first letter of the father's nickname. In the 17-19 centuries, a newborn foal could be named both in honor of the father (Dogonya’s son - Dogonyaika) and in honor of the mother (Bogatyrka’s son - Bogatyr). It happened that the name of the little horse consisted of the first two syllables of the nicknames of the father and mother (Acceleration - the son of the Robber and the Race). Well-chosen nicknames of horses mean a connection with the clan.

By semantic groups, more than ten types of nicknames are distinguished. This may be the names of objects, abstract or specific, for example, Thunderstorm or Workbench; there may also be place names (Hungarian, American). Another foal can get a name based on his character (Clever, Bedokur, Miracle). Very often, the nicknames of horses sound like a spell or battle cry (Catch up, Fly away). But in general, the name of the horse should “give out kinship” with one or another well-known manufacturer, or declare the characteristics of the animal, or be a symbol of future achievements and victories. The latter in the old days was characteristic of the army, in particular, for cavalry troops.

Today, unfortunately, there is a very disappointing tendency to give the nicknames of horses , literally balancing on the verge of norm and harmony. Often the owners forget that the horse is a very intelligent and noble animal. It is able to feel the emotions of the people around it, and, of course, swagger, ridicule, and sometimes their aggression will not do any good to the horse.
