Table of height and weight of adolescents: what to do if your child’s indicators differ from the average

What should be the normal parameters of a person? Here everything is relative and depends on many factors, such as heredity, body type, bone thickness, age and some others, so these indicators are very individual. It is still more difficult with adolescents, since this period for each of them proceeds differently: someone grows up earlier, someone later, someone stretches out first, and then gains weight, and someone vice versa, therefore, the norms of weight and adolescent growth is a relative concept. To determine them, a centile table of height and weight of adolescents was developed, which reflects statistical data on the parameters of children of different ages.

This table includes the percentage of weight and height among adolescents of the same age. It should be noted that it is best to use the latest versions of it, created on the basis of recent data collected in the country where you live - over time, these parameters change, and they also depend on the genotype. The table of height and weight of adolescents shows how many percent of HEALTHY children of this age have a similar ratio. If this indicator is located in three middle columns, this indicates that it is typical for most adolescents of this age, while in the second and penultimate columns, it means that not many children have such parameters, but this is rather an individual feature. and the first and last columns indicate that no more than three percent of their peers identify this ratio. In principle, even extreme indicators often turn out to be a development feature, but the risk of endocrine abnormalities should be excluded, so it is best to consult a doctor and take hormone tests.

A summary table of height and weight of adolescents is preferable to individual tables of height and weight, since it reflects the development of the body as a whole, while normal indications of weight and height in children from 10 years old can vary within very wide limits. The best option is to evaluate physical development based on all three tables.

A separate problem these days is the weight of adolescents. According to the results of studies, more than half of them consider themselves too full, while overweight is found in adolescents no more than eight percent. Since adolescents tend to over-experience their most often non-existent shortcomings, this far-fetched problem seriously affects their lives. Unfortunately, the pursuit of certain far-fetched ideals often forces them to lead a secluded life, avoid communication with peers and even leads to mental problems, which, in turn, affect the physical state, so it is extremely important not to miss the beginning of the development of this problem and to maximize support and care.

Meanwhile, overweight in adolescents, even if it was detected, is often a developmental feature at this stage: it is quite common for children to gain weight first and then grow a few centimeters at once, and the weight gained will naturally go away. But, even if the problem of excess weight is deeper, then coping with it at this age is not difficult by contacting specialists who will help adjust the diet and lifestyle of the child.

If a teenager has a lack of weight - in the vast majority of cases this does not mean that he is unhealthy. Most likely, he has thin bones, he has recently grown strongly or leads an active lifestyle, which is very characteristic of this age, but problems with the endocrine system in this case should also be excluded by contacting a specialist.

The table of height and weight of adolescents is just a reference material, and it is incorrect to draw premature conclusions only on its basis, since adolescence is such a period when changes in the human body occur very quickly, and there are many options for the norm, so only a qualified person should assess the situation specialist.
